    Shifting problem

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Symptoms are:
Car is off and goes through all gears fine
Car is on and 1-2 shift is either very hard or not there. All other gears seem fine. I am also able to start in second.

I adjusted the JHM short shifter one last time to get very finite. Flywheel and clutch are both upgraded. Sound like a syncro or collar problem? Don't know if a transmission service of fluids and lube would have any effect...

There is an updated 1-2 shift collar and second gear because the teeth can wear off to the point that you can't get into second gear at all. I would bet that is your problem.

Just to be sure though try doing this. On flat ground with the engine off and your feet on the clutch and brake pedals, put the shifter into first gear, start the engine, let off the brake pedal. Does the car move forward or sit still? If it moves forward then your clutch is stuck engaging. If the car sits still then the clutch is fine. You have to think of manual transmission as two parts 1. the front half with the clutch and 2. the back half with the shift forks, collars, and synchros.

Furthermore shifting 1-2 at 20 and below is fine. It's at higher RPM and when hard accelerating that it occurs..

    Sounds like worn out synchros.

    Just a simple idea:
If you try to double clutch can you engage 2nd, while moving at higher revs?
If yes, then it's the synchros, because with matching the revs of the engine and transmission input shaft you do the synchros job.

Get a longer 6th gear while you got the trani apart!
There's a direct replacement gear with a ratio of 0.56 opposed to the original 0.72.

Is this replacement provided by Audi?

There is a European TDI sixth gear that fits perfectly. I have one that I am selling for $500 shipped. The ratio that I have is 0.53 instead of 0.56 so the rpms are a little lower still.

Genuine Audi sprockets from the All-Road quattro trani (if I'm not mistaken).
I found the set for ~600€, it pays for itself if you do a lot of highway miles.

Check your clutch slave and fluids before doing a transmission rebuild.

    Shifting problem

I am definitely thinking about the fluids. 1-2 at under 20 is still very smooth. It's not until I "get on it" that it becomes a hassle. Going to also try one last time at getting the shifter perfectly set up, although I think that it won't matter much.
