    Folding mirrors?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Good morning fellow AZ C5 people of earth.

OK, this may be the worlds most stupid question ever but:

My '01 has the 3 way mirror control thing in the center near the "manual" shifter. Sorry, I just love saying "manual" in relation to a 4.2!!

Anyhow, the switch has the graphic and position for folding mirrors but I can't figure out what or why they don't work. It's possible that the last owner swapped the switch, but unlikely as it looks as old as the car.

Is there anyway I can check this out for sure?

    Cheers all.

4.2 should have folding mirrors. You want to turn it so the position indicator line points downward :)

That MANUAL V8 definitely has that option ;)

Rotate the knob so it's pointing backward and your mirrors should fold in, if it's working.

Also want to mention car needs to be "on" in order for them to move. I don't know how many time's I've pulled the key in the RS, and then try to fold the mirrors.

I'm here! bpark really helped out with pictures for the relay. I'm messing with a 2.7t, so I'm not sure about standard 4.2 options. Mine aren't working yet either. I've got the switch, the relay, the mirrors, and everything is connected so I'm not sure where I've gone wrong.. working on it!

    All good info gents, thanks.

I'll keep looking into it. If I fold them manually i can feel serious resistance as if there is a mechanism in there. As I said, the switch is there as well so maybe it's either that relay or something else that isn't working.

    Cheers.

    speaking of folding mirrors

is there a bump stop of something that keeps the mirrors at the correct spot? The car washes here in chicago pushed my mirrors all the way flush and now the car doesn't know where to stop "unfolding" the mirrors. Folding them back in works just fine

Yup. Don't ask for proof cuz it's in 168182637293993838283892.333333333333(repeating of course) pieces currently.

I remember cuz I took the memory modules out of the tan door cards before I threw them out.

Someone figure this out, I want them too. Can't be putting greasy fingerprints on $400 aluminum mirrors.

Neither did mine. Pretty sure power-folding mirrors were introduced on the facelift models, so 2002+

Our 01' Allroad has them but the 02' doesn't appear to have them. The 01' has memory seat whereas the 02' doesn't. I assume if you have memory seats the mirrors came with that package?

The NA 4.2's were easier to predict though since by default they were fully loaded. At least in Canada the only options that where truly "options" were the hot weather package, nav and Sport package. Everything else was just standard unless the original owner requested something be excluded or changed (like comfort seats with Sport suspension and wheels).

North America's "bigger is better" mentality truly screwed us out of some pretty awesome cars. The Focus RS JUST got here, Nissan 240's(Silvia's) came with sr20det(4cyl turbo) everywhere else but a stupid truck motor from the hardbody pick-ups, it goes on and on. Even this, the 4.2 gets marketed as the "supreme a6" because of the big bad v8. So annoying.

Yep, memory seats on both sides.

Maybe there's something wrong in there somewhere. Is there a relay or fuse for this? I can't find mention of it in the manual at all.

My 2.7 has memory seats, heated seats, solar sunroof, etc...no power fold! Or at least it isn't working. It really does suck.

Here's the thing guys, they have two different switched for power fold and non-power fold. *as long as the switch has not been replaced* If it has the folding icon, you have power fold mirrors and something is wrong. No icon means NO FOLD FOR YOU!.

Every C5 I've had has come with power fold but that only goes back to my 01 allroad, which in some ways the allroad was already slightly facelifted despite no soft touch, pf style headlight switch and Symphony I.

    ^^

I'll keep looking into it as i have the switch, it looks original (it's pretty beaten up) and both seats are memory and it's an '01 and a 4.2. Symphony 1 though and I have no clue about different headlight switches.

It, like most things Audi, is rather confusing and confused. Some do and some don't. Some say it's a pre and post facelift thing and others say it was always an option.

Mine seems to have all the stuff for it but they don't fold. If I fold them manually they feel like there's a motor in there but obviously I can't be sure without taking them apart. Maybe I have a fuse or relay out.

    I'll keep investigating.

It seems as though all the power folding switches are heavily worn/scratched like the one pictured above, suggesting soft touch and thus, a facelifted option(2001.5-on).

Mine is the bottom one. No fold option. I thought I was retrofitting them until everything was plug and play but obviously something is missing. So I guess I need the new switch (which I can't find anywhere for sale, anyone have any links?) and to do some wiring. Sigh, it's never easy

Well I am going to have to wait until someone far smarter than I gets a chance to look at it because I can't figure it out. If there's a relay or specific fuse for it I can't locate it.

Meanwhile I have other small projects to take care of,

I fixed mine, and they work. I just had the wrong switch. As long as the switch is correct and everything is plugged in, it'd have to be the relay or the motors. The relay is 361.

Another thing to consider is if the mirror switch breaks (easy enough to bump it and snap the knob off) it's possible to replace just the 'switch' and use the old faceplate/ trim piece. So, it's entirely possible the switch could have been replaced with a non-Memory switch and the original trim snapped onto it.
Check the actual part# on the bottom of the switch itself and cross reference the non-memory version..see if it's correct !
