building a custom exhaust HELP (magnaflow mufflers)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi guys,
So I'm officially sick of the single sided dual exhaust look on the 2.0T. I am looking to go dual exit quad tip, I already have the diffuser for the change. I was looking to change out the mufflers for two magnaflow mufflers

    http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mpe-14805 (Part number #14805).

Along with getting a y-pipe ran, I came across other people replacing the middle muffler/ resonator (not sure which it is) with another magnaflow muffler.

    http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mpe-11236 (Part number #11236)

but I haven't seen someone do both yet. So my question is, can I do this and will it sound good or will it be super quiet? I also will have a CTS Turbo DP and HFC and a stage 2 tune. I know some people even cut off the middle muffler/resonator but I don't want drone. I would assume that with the two magnaflow mufflers a DP and a HFC I should have a pretty good tone. I was wondering if anyone could help me out!

    Thanks guys for your help.

Blbroo did a custom set up on his that sounds great. He cut out mid muffler and inserted a Magnaflow 11236 and deleted his rear muffler. He then added a ford F-150 exhaust damper to kill done. The only other thing he has is a Spulen HFC

did you delete the mid muffler? i know a lot of people go straight pipe but that is going to drone so bad. I dont want to replace the mid muffler and rear mufflers with the magnaflow muffler and have it be super quiet.. I want a good sound just not drone. What setup do you have?

What exhaust damper? The counterweight they put on their older trucks? I'd love to see how he has that placed

Oh hey, late to the party.

F65Z5G209AA is the ford part number, and yep, it's one of those counterweight things. Just need something heavy to break up the resonance. I clamped it on with a muffler clamp right where the rear muffler used to be.

HA! I searched "ford f150 exhaust damper" and my pic was the 7th one in the list.

Do you have any other pics of the dampener mounted to the exhaust? My M3 drones a bit and I am thinking about adding a dampener like this!

I was planning to do a custom magnaflow exhaust, but after finding out how much labour cost is in my city, the cost was almost the same as an off the shelf. But based on my research, my idea was to go something among these lines.

    http://www.hottexhaust.com/Magnaflow_12158 - Center resonator
    http://www.hottexhaust.com/Magnaflow_12258 - Two rear mufflers
    http://www.hottexhaust.com/Magnaflow_35125 - 4 Tips.

Remember our exhaust piping is 2.5 inch, so not sure how that would work with the muffler you posted since its inlet is 2.25.

What exactly does that do to prevent drone?

Did you ever run your setup without it...noticeable difference?

It works the same way any vibration damper does. The drone comes when a long section of pipe hits it's natural frequency and the damper is there to break it up. Think of ringing a bell. It hums after you hit it because the entire thing is vibrating, but if you were to grab part of it, the sound would deaden.

I researched ways to get rid of drone after having the rear muffler removed and hating the deep hum at certain RPMs. This worked great.

building a custom exhaust HELP (magnaflow mufflers)

I have a different muffler in resonator section but with same specs as the magnaflow(rep) with a muffler delete. Piping is 3" and my downpipe was catless but I added a magnaflow high flow cat 2 weeks ago. Still loud and sounds good to me. It blends in when you cruise but loud when you go WOT. It droned nasty when I had just the straight piped catback portion which is why I added a muffler. I use my car for work and don't want something annoying and too loud when driving around town.

EDIT: I got confused and thought I was reading a thread from mk6 forums lol I haven't done anything to my Audi yet :)

Not sure if that counterweight is gonna do much; those are really just for vibration on the stock exhaust systems. To combat drone correctly you will have to change the way the sound waves travel, usually with a standard or side branch resonator.

I've got a week alone starting Monday night. I'll try to get some audio showing my exhaust sound with and without the damper. It makes a huge difference for me.

    Yo B!

Was hoping to replicate this on my rig! Which Magnaflow muffler did you use for the middle swap? I was on their site and based on plugging in our car info, it spits out part# 12226 or #14226 (center/offset; 2.5/2.5; 5x8 ovalStraight Through type). Is this what I need along with the rear muffler delete + Ford vibration dampener?

Any/all assistance greatly appreciated as always!

Had a custom shop remove the mufflers and add a magnaflow resonator. That vid was from when I just did it. Will get around to getting a better video with a driveby.

What's good Marko! So no mufflers at all huh? Just the resonator. How's the droning at lower rpms?

Since my rig is my DD, I don't want to get too aggressive with the sound. Just wanna deepen the baritone a bit without being too obnoxious.

Earhythmic suggested I delete the middle muffler, straight pipe that section, and swap out the rear with a Magnaflow. He liked the sound of that setup..

    Any/all recommendations welcomed and appreciated.

Nope no mufflers just a resonator. This is my daily as well but I don't think it's too aggressive. I like how the tone changes as the rpms climb. IMO exhausts are usually hit and miss, and everyones personal tastes vary just as much as the exhaust notes. Your best bet is to find an example of something you like online, and replicate. Other than that, I think it is pretty pointless to spend over $1000 for some brand name exhaust that is marked up at least 100%. I went to a local custom shop and got it done for under $700 CAD. Couldn't be happier.

    Welp!
Dropped my whip off at local shop near the office. Snagged a MF 11236 locally ala O'Reiley Auto. Replacing middle muffler, removing larger resonator (keeping smaller unit on); disconnecting the rear/straight pipe down with different tailpipe...

    Pics/vid hopefully to follow later.

Had a custom shop remove the mufflers and add a magnaflow resonator. That vid was from when I just did it. Will get around to getting a better video with a driveby.

Marko, that video sounds great. Can you get another video up, of a drive-by, take-off, or in cabin? Your setup, on paper, sounds like it would drone a lot, and be really loud. But that video you posted sounds great.

I am running a HFC into a non-res Borla downpipe. Then stock large center res and stock muffler. Something is going to change soon to get a nice deep tone (the downpipe+HFC adds a nice rasp).

    Just got the car back!

Middle and lower mufflers removed. Middle replaced with Magnaflow #11236. Larger of the 2 front resonators removed with the smaller one left on.
Rear straight piped with single bore black chrome oval tip.

Gotta say not bad at all! Not obnoxiously loud but enough to notice when punching it.

Thank you sir! Given I've never tangled with the exhaust other than installing the Spulen HFC several months back, she's been running on the stock exhaust for the longest! Arguably the best $280 spent for the job! (Including MF 11236, chrome tip, and labor!).

Wanna also give a big Shout Out to my fellow Bay Area B8-8.5 aficionado EARHYTHMIC! His wealth of knowledge and willingness to help out and answer any/all of my questions, no matter how inane, is what all of us should aspire towards as members. Can't emphasize enough how everyone's contributions here have been so invaluable. Mad respect for sure!
