Okay I was just looking through some craigslist ads for cars and I came across a 2005.5 b7 s4 the ad only says the car will start but won't run. The seller says the shop they took it to said the cam chain may be off a tooth. The car is selling for 3200 it's in pretty decent shape from the photos. I'm thinking about buying it, I'm thinking if it's beyond a 6k repair budget I could probably part it out for more than 3200 but that may be wishful thinking because I lack knowledge on the 4.2 and the b7 platform.( I would attempt to do the labor myself, although those timing chains look pretty damn scary)

Beware of bent valve. Get compression test, and scope. Never buy these engines without really knowing the story behind it.

Bent valves is what I'm suspecting for this car, there are a few i saw close to me I could go and check out but they are all high mileage, around the Milage where the chains should be replaced, I'm going to look into how much it costs to rebuild one of these, want to see if it would be more cost effective to buy a used low mileage vs a rebuild.

If it's asking for $3.2K, i would buy a new engine at ebay for $9K and no worry for running another 100K.
