Could changing oil bet any easier? I can't see how.

Audi Care expired 10,000 miles ago and today I did the first oil change in the car with my new Topsider Oil Extractor. I'd posted on here some time ago asking about extractors and one of the replies pointed me to the Topsider. Checked it out online and found a couple good YouTube videos, saw that it appeared to be a good product, so I ordered one. Couldn't be happier. I ordered my oil from Walmart, 5 pack of filters from ECS, and knocked out the oil change this morning.

Ran the car for about 5 minutes to warm the oil a bit. Pumped up the Topsider to pull a vacuum, pulled the dipstick, inserted the tube and started the extraction. It started pulling oil right away but after about 15 minutes I noticed that I hadn't completely released the clamp on the hose so I suspect I doubled my extraction time. While that was going on, off with the old filter and in with the new one. While waiting for the oil extraction to finish, I took the opportunity to check and top off coolant and windshield washer fluid. Finished up the extraction, refilled with 0W40 Mobil One and cleaned up without a drop being spilled. Worked perfectly and I didn't have to crawl under the car.

If you're on the fence about extracting the oil vs draining it, I'd definitely go for it. That's what your dealership is doing. Also, two thumbs up for the Topsider. Worked really well and feels solid.

You could have taken it to a Valvoline oil change franchise! J/K. I think most will get my gist.

    This is AWESOME!!!!!

I just had my 35k service done and my dealership Audicare is only going to cover me for one more at 45k. I am looking forward at doing some of the simpler maintenance on my own.

Listen to this. I did the old normal oil change. And coming from a tech that works on cars day to day. I will be buying the extractor for my 2nd oil change. I did my first one being a cheap ass and didn't want to buy a extractor. But changing the oil the normal way is flat out lame. You make a mess and you have to almost strip the drain plug out to get it to seal right. I won't be taking that drain plug out anymore that's for sure. I will be buying an extractor that is for sure. FTW

I performed my last oil change using a MightyVac extractor. It worked great and I actually look forward to doing my next oil change instead of the normal dread. I definitely recommend this method for convenience and cost, considering tat the dealer does it the same way. In fact, when I asked the dealer why the quote for an oil change was so high, the service advisor cited the top-side oil extraction method as the reason that the cost was higher, i.e. because it takes more time than draining by gravity. So instead I paid $100 once for my vacuum extractor and will reap the benefit of doing the job myself in the future.

Sorry, I am going to buck the system here...I love getting under my car. I enjoy making sure everything is in good shape, clean up any dirt, oil, etc. that lurks below. I get it that extraction is convenient- but something is said for the intimacy of being underneath my car. Maybe its because I have four daughters and 8 dogs that I want to be in my garage as long as possible?

I went with the manual pump version due to not having a good compressed air source. I had to pump it up a few times throughout the process to reestablish the vacuum to keep the oil flowing, so it wasn't totally hands-off. Still better than taking it to the dealer, but had I a good compressor situation I would have sprung for the air powered version for sure.

Good to know, now I'm leaning toward buying one. It seems really easy and with a dealer cost of $ 150 to do it, it would pay for itself with one oil change.

Has anyone used an extractor, then when drained but not yet filled, pulled the drain plug just to see what came out? I'm for the extractor, but not sure it will get everything down in the drain plug area. I also agree with @MerkurRS in that getting underneath allows you to visually inspect many more things than you could topside. Also, if you have a magnetic drain plug it will allow you to remove those shavings to allow more metal to cling. I doubt there will be so much metal that it would lose it's effectiveness but I'm also not willing to test that out.

Looks like a miniature floor polisher... Lol. I've tried and passed on these. I was one of the unfortunate ones to get a leaky mitivac. Was a huge pain and totally not worth it. Ended up tossing it (I tried two different ones and had same issue both times). Glad this worked out for you guys.

Im with you on this until i did my own and found how much of a pita the drain plug is. The drain plug is garbage on these cars. I like studying the engine but I'll still do it just won't be taking the drain plug out.

What exactly was leaking for you, the hose or the container..?

To be fair the Mityvac has some unfavorable reviews when I was looking up different extractors but the reviews for this one seem solid.

After watching video and seeing a couple of the posts regarding the Mityvac, it looks this TopSider gets my vote due to it's simplicity. Even if you only get one oil change out of it, you'd be ahead.

It's simple and well made. The vacuum pump and hose assemblies screw onto the can with rubber gaskets to seal them. When you're done, you pull those off and replace them with two caps that come with the kit and now you've got a sealed container that you can take to the auto parts store to dispose of the oil. I couldn't be happier. I spilled zero drops of oil in my garage.

We need 7.2 U.S. quarts for a fill, as memory serves me.

I did my 2016 S4's first oil change last October when the car had close to 1900 miles on it. I will be doing the next one soon at either 5,000 miles or 6,000 miles.. Haven't decided yet which it will be but probably at 6000 then again at 10,000, and then at every 5,000 miles thereafter.

I used a MityVac 7400 which is the manual pump version and it worked like a charm. I was very pleased.

Question - what are you guys doing for your service light reset? Does Carista work or do you have to be in beta?

    Do you ever find anything?

I'd think that's what the filter is for.

For the oil fill funnel, I didn't have any that would work without spilling oil on the valve cover and parts below. There is a plastic, or nylon, device that partially covers the opening that you will see when you remove the oil fill cap. Most funnels are not going to clear this and it will block oil from leaving the funnel. You need a funnel with a very wide and short opening to insure that the new oil will clear that impediment and not spill out of of the fill opening.

So I made one out of a 1/2 gallon milk container. It works perfectly and doesn't spill a drop.

I'm just going to say wow. Having turned wrenches for a living through college and doing my own vehicle maintenance this was by far amazing.

No pump it about forty times and let it go to work. To get the last couple quarts I had to repump a few more times
