    Whining noise

I drove a few hundred miles today to the Arnold Classic and on the way home I was hearing a whining noise coming from the engine. The noise stayed the same while driving and when I slowed down or stopped it faded. Any idea of what it is? 2011 S4-68,000miles. Thanks

    The supercharger?

    Jk

Only whining I can think of could be from a wheel bearing but you're saying it's coming from the engine?

I would assume supercharger or the wheel bearing

Wheel bearings are more of a growl than a whine. But if it was a wheel bearing type noise what about the inner CV joint on the axel...that might sound like it's coming from the engine area.

One great way to tell is while driving put the car if neutral and let the revs drop while at speed. If the sound truly is engine related it should dissipate. If the sound only drops as the car slows then it's something in the running gear.

I put the car in neutral and the noise still there. When I have the car in park, there is no noise.

If you have someone that could drive with you, have them listen from the outside at speed, e which side it's coming from, wheel well, engine compartment, etc.

Actually before that, inspect your tires, make sure that there isn't some tread issue. Also look at the undercarriage for debris, wife had a branch stuck under there once that created wind noise.

Also check the radiator, make sure you didn't get a bag or trash stuck to it. Had a buddy overheat an engine once due to plastic bag stuck to the radiator.

Record the noise and post it.
Have you recently done any mods?
    Could be tires wearing out...

I had the same issue ended up being a wheel bearing. The sound happened going over 30 was correlated to speed. As I increased sound was louder and when I slowed down I heard the noise "whine" down

So it's louder at speed, but still present when stopped in drive or in neutral, but in park there is no noise, correct? What if you are stopped in drive/neutral and turn AC on and off, does the sound change? What if you just rev the engine in neutral?

Regardless it's not wheel bearings or axles isn't moving and still making noise.

Tried reving engine in neutral and no sound. It seems as I start moving past 10mph the whining sounds starts and as I slow down it whines down. Tires are new, no wear. Revved the engine with hood open and no whining sound. As I was driving, I turned left and right, didn't change the sound at all.

Maybe check for a small pebble/piece of gravel stuck in between the rotor dust shield. I had an issue like this when I drove through a recently paved hwy and it started as a whine, then became a god-awful rattle. Worth a check.

Not to be the bearer of bad new, but ours was making a noise that sounded like the power steering was low on fluid (almost not noticeable), but it turned out to be the Transmission. The last time we had this noise (witch I thought was just the supercharger spooling) was the trans going south, and just after having it's major trans service at 75K. Went in on Friday for 85k oil change, and it has been in our dealers service bay waiting for Audi to decide what to do, we on the other hand are driving a Q5 loaner (very nice by the way). Our transmission was replace last Dec. so we are under warranty. This S4 it's not doing much for us in the confidence department right now.

The OP said there was no noise when parked and only while moving. As JKrups06 said, it's probably a wheel bearing or it could be driveline related.

Bad wheel bearing at 68k miles? That's little disheartening...
