    Trade 2013 b8.5 S4 DSG for 2013 e92 M3 6MT?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi guys,

I wanted to get your opinions. I've been looking for a low mileage, well kept RS4, but there are so few out there now. Recently, I've found a very low mileage 2013 e92 M3 6mt. The car is pretty much mint and at a good price. Now, I'm completely aware of the potential with my S4, but speed and quickness isn't necessarily the most important thing for me as I don't track, but an NA V8 in manual seems like something to consider as the industry is trending toward (has been trending toward) FI and DSG/DCT/PDK, etc. So the question is, should I do it?

It's a more spirited and involving car. The 6MT is an added bonus in that regard too, compared to your DSG S4.

I think you'd enjoy the M3 if driving experience is important to you.

It is a completely subjective decision. Are you single/married/kids? Will this be your only car? Do you need AWD? Do you need four doors?

Go take a test drive and see if you like the M3 better than the S4.

P.S. I have a 2015 DSG S4 and have been looking at E92 M3s and 996/997 911 Turbos (leaning toward manual), so that tells you what I think you should do

A v8 that revs to 8500 is quite intoxicating. My personal opinion between the two is the S4 is a great daily driver due to the low end torque, the M3 is more of a weekend/track car.

If i had the means i would have both. S4 daily, M3 weekend/fun car.

I was actually cross shopping my S4 with a LCI e92 M3 but ultimately went with the S4 because it was more practical. Do I regret it... eh a little. Personally it would 60/40 M3/S4. Tho I'm not sure if there's has been more info regarding the rod bearings for 2013s at all?

I'm married. Don't have kids, but do have a dog. I live in California and don't really need AWD. The only time I would really need it would be for trips to Mammoth or Tahoe, which would be no more than a couple times a year at most.

Rod bearing failure is the thing I'm most concerned with in the e92.

I came from a e90 LCI 335i 6 speed with full suspension and more power than the M3. in certain aspects I miss my 335i, but I am glad I made the switch to the S4.

So, little biased here...as I just traded in my E92 MT for the Audi S4 MT (though, my BMW was a 2008).

Like Scotty above stated, there are many things that I already miss, some large, some small. From my aspect, I don't think that a new BMW (F32's) are as good as the S4 (actually far from) which is why I went the Audi route. But I don't think there's much better than the E92 out there, and if you found a good one...I'd take strong consideration. With the M3, you're getting excellent seating and what I think is perfect steering feel. The clutch is light, take up is great, and is really one of the best shifting cars ever. To boot, the sound of that V8 is incredible.

There are pros and cons...but I highly doubt you will be disappointed at all.

    Good luck with your decision.

One of those drove past me in San Fran today... it was lowered and had an exhaust and proper wheels. The thing sounded freaking phenominal and looked the part. That NA V8 is a sweet sounding thing! If you are looking for a V8 with MT then go for it! I'm sure it's more of an emotional experience to drive vs an S4 unless you properly mod the S4... but even still...
I unfortunately can't get over the brand - the whole d-bag status is very real with BMW and that is what keeps me seriously considering the brand... call me stubborn but it is what it is... props to BMW for continuing to make MT cars though...

you can just get a Blackstone oil analysis every oil change... or spend the I think 3-4k to replace them with better ones before they actually go. that did factor into my decision partially as well

I owned an e90 6mt m3 for about a year. Loved it! It's more engaging and fun to drive than the s4 imo but it's also more demanding and higher strung. I do miss the m3 a lot but I am very happy with the s4. A bit more livable and easy going as a dd.

The na v8 in the m3 isn't that fun, I've owned one. You have to string it out to get any hp. If you want to switch, get an amg. So much more fun to drive on the street. I've owned a c63, e90 m3 and the s4 and the amg was hands down the most fun I've had in a sedan. If you want more v8 fun, get a ctsv. That will probably be my next fun sedan. Supercharged v8, great trans and easily modded. What's not to love.

You mean horsepower; but IMO there is nothing better than stringing out a high revving N/A engine! RS4/5, 458, GT3, Huracan, etc- all are relatively low torque, and require you to string them out, but are some of the most fun engines out there!

I was in the same predicament and decided with the s4. Main reason was the weather during winter since this is my dd.

The M handles better, is more engaging, has a lot more steering feel and is just a better drivers car. It also sounds better.

But, its less practical. It gets terrible gas mileage and obviously RWD.

I was on the fence about one, but at the time I was driving 2,000 miles a month for work all over NY state and didn't want to deal with 15 MPG, and RWD in the middle of nowhere.

If my life situation was flipped as it stands now hands down I would have one over the S4. It's a better drivers car, can't really argue that. I also work from home now so driving in the white stuff is optional.

LOL! This is a good one. First of all, you are really not making any sense. I think you mean HP.

Also, people who talk like this make it seem like its a chore or not fun to rev a little.

I've driven an E92 M3 DCT and it was absolutely intoxicating. The V8 sounds fantastic, it was quick as hell and the absolute last thing on my mind were any questions about torque.

Maybe a diesel car is better for you if you want all your power below 4K?

The MT has issues on that M3. Second gear synchro grinds. The DCT is a much faster car and the better transmission for that platform.

If I were not a snow sports person I would be in an M3. RWD, infintely better steering, lighter, high-revving V8... no competition... until it starts to dump. Like right now...

One of my previous cars was the E92 M3, but with the DCT. I was super excited when I ordered it after coming out of an E90 335 and prior to that the B7 A4.

Driving experience was great, great handling, super fast shifts and fast. However, overall I wasn't as impressed as I expected. Torque was lacking and while the driving experience was great, the caveat there is that the experience was only great when spirited driving was desired. Granted, this was 90% of the time; however, certain days I would have been happier with an easier ride.

Admittedly, I do wonder over to the BMW site to look at the M3, but I don't believe this would give me the overall experience I want in a car. Moreover, I cannot get past how the hood sits on the newer models - my on earth did they stop the hood with such a prominent line straight across, this, to me, is an awful eyesore, much worse than any dash mounted, table navigation.

For me, the S4 works very well with my needs and it doesn't have that d-bag factor that looms over the BMW (in my area). Slap on a few mods (suspension, flash, exhaust, intake, etc) and the S4 rounds out very nicely with less than the M3.

e92 M3 is nice, but if possible I'd go with the F80.

    Yep, I meant hp.

And sure, stringing out a high reving v8 is fun, but not really practical on the street. A torque-y motor, with hp to boot, makes for a fun DD, which is why the amg is a ton of fun on the street.

I did mean hp, it was a typo.

And I do make sense because I actually owned an e90 m3 for an extended period of time; I didn't just drive one, once or twice. Sure, it was a fun car, don't get me wrong, but I found my amg a lot more enjoyable on the street because of the torque (and it didn't lack on hp either).

Your diesel comment doesn't make any sense. When did we start talking about diesel cars?

The S4 can't be compared to those cars because they aren't in the same class. Go drive one and make your own decision.

Same thing here. Went between the amg, v, m3 and s4. Loved loved loved the amg. M3 was a beast and by far my overall favorite. S4 was just a perfect everything car. Snows in the Midwest... west cost I'd have that m3 or amg
