2010 A4, out of warrenty consuming oil

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well I bought my A4 last august with 95k miles. I noticed after a few thousand miles that it was burning oil and now im at 108k way out of warrenty and not left with many options. I called Audi after learning about the piston replacement but guess what I'm too late. Pretty disappointed because when I spent 14k on a car I was expecting to be without any problems. But the thing burns twice the amount of oil as my old 190k piece of shit saab. so a quart every 2000 miles isnt a ton but is this going to get significantly worse, what options could I do. So far ive replaced the pcv myself and it didnt do anything except get rid of my CEL. I wanted to go APR stage 1 but now im worried it will just ruin my already worn engine. I cant sell the thing either considering I owe a lot of money still and havent had it for more then 6 months.

My advice, based on similar situations reported by other owners who are out of warranty, is to call around to as many dealers as possible to find one who will go to bat for you with Audi, or at least offer a discount on the repairs.

My engine was replaced at 86,000 miles, no questions asked. I was using a quart every 800miles though...

I was out of warranty and tuned with APR stage 2. I complained about the oil burning to the dealer and how much the oil consumption test would cost and the dealer covered the stage 1 fix. After 1k miles they had me come back and deemed stage 2 wasn't necessary. I burn 1qt of oil every 4500 miles now but I change the oil and filter around 5k anyways.

If you're out of warranty and Audi won't come to the party for a stage 2 repair (piston/ring replacement), have a look at the Mahle forged pistons.
I'm investigating them myself at the moment (mine chews 5.7 litres of oil per 1000km's) and from what I'm seeing it might just be worth a look. They seem superior to the stock part and should be a lot cheaper to purchase and have installed. Even if you have some scoring on your cylinder walls you can get oversized pistons and re-hone the cylinders to suit - much cheaper than buying the new "Base Engine" from Audi! (RRP AUD$19k)

Just my $.02 (and more than happy to be proven wrong! - I'z no mechanic haha!) :)

a quart every 2000 miles is not bad at all, esp for a 2010

Im burning 1 quart every 1000mi approx. Also out of warranty...my assumption is that stage 1 should help bur I can seem to find what exactly stage 1 replaces so I can do on my own...

Contact AOA, they will let you know if you can still get your car fixed or not. Once they say yes, they will contact he dealer nearest you.

Agreed with whoever said it above, call around (or call AoA) and see if you can find someone will go to bat higher up. Otherwise, the car will need new rings and pistons at some point. I've seen Audi cover a few out of warranty examples, but we've also done a ton of repair jobs, so the odds aren't exactly stacked in the consumers favor, unfortunately.

If I was going through a qt. every 2000mi (once I was sure that Audi wouldn't give me any assistance), I'd buy a 5 qt. jug of oil from Wal-Mart for $25. Just keep topping it off, and start putting cash aside in case it gets worse. That's really not that bad compared to some.

But I'd check with AOA first, I was one of the lucky ones that got the repair paid for with mileage similar to yours.

Its worth a try to see if AoA will cover it out of good faith.

If not you're essentially in a situation where you've just took a several thousand dollar hit. Whether it be the cost to do the repair or the hit you'll take when you trade-in the car and get something else. The situation sucks. You bought an out-of-warranty used Audi and needs significant repair. Its always a risk with buying an older car. You just have to do whatever hurts you least financially.

what was your service history like with audi? do you repair often or not at all (to those guys that had it covered out of warranty)

I have never repaired at audi dealership so I'm feeling they will not help me. I'm at 155k (km) burning 1L every 400km which is horrible. Replacing my pcv diaphragm helped a bit but not fixed. I also have loose wastegate and I feel if I don't fix it, they will blame that and if I do the DIY they will say you modded wg and that's the cause

My local dealer did Stage II with a P0299, but did not change my turbo, so I ended up doing it myself. They didn't give me any trouble, but maybe that was because I had already done Stage I with them prior. Aside from some of your time, what does it cost you to try though?
