B5 S4 Tip Trans stuck in third SOMETIMES???????

Ok, so the trans has about 140k or so. Recently it started shuttering in first, second, third, and fourth once around 2.5k rpm. After a bit of that it will shift into third and that would be that. Stuck in third. Can still put it in park, reverse and neutral, but when put into drive, right to third gear and won't shift from it. Now if I turn her off and back on, she just starts the process over again. What's going on? Need me some trans experts here. And I already know someone will answer with replace with manual trans. Trust me I wish but i can't afford it now. Just a solenoid or maybe just some major trans shit. Need it done kinda quick. Trying to decide on selling or parting the car. Not sure if I will, but its possible. Thanks for any help that comes in.

A couple of questions here.

Is the PRNDS / PRND4321 legend all lit up solid?
How do you work out the transmission is locked to 3rd?

Really, you would need to pull DTC's from your transmission, and post the results here.

If you need a new tip trans I got a rebuilt tip trans from my 2002 B5 S4 that's just sitting and collecting dust. I have been contemplating on dropping it off to the scrap yard a few times.

yeah everything is lit. When it locks up instead of the numbers and letters being red, the whole area where they appear turns red. I know its 3rd because of the rpm to speed I'm going. I don't really have any way to pull dtc's. I don't have vagcom.

I would love it. depending on the price lol. Shipping would be crazy though. I'm on the opposite side of the country. If you dont want to ship it though, that ok with me, I would understand lol.

Scan for any codes first. But I would ask when you had the transmission fluid/filter changed last? Checked the fluid level? Fresh fluid and filter might be the answer to the symptoms you are having.
