    high miles/ultra high miles RS4s?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm seriously considering buying another RS4 - the last car I had was 40k miles whenI bought it, sold it 3 years later with 55 - I'm looking at a car with 135k miles, While I realize this car doesn't experience the same timing chain issues the S4 does, do they have things to be worried about in ultra high miles? The carI am looking at has already had the carbon treatment done twice now (once about 5k miles ago) and has been maintained, doesn't seem to burn oil, or not any more than my other car did (1qt ever 2k miles give or take) - My only problem is It doesn't have maintenance records until about 90k miles where it's been maintained consistently by an Audi master mechanic who is the owner...

What are the things I need to check at high miles, does anyone have any higher miles cars, 130+ and how has it been?

    Thanks - Z

at that mileage the chassis is more to worry about than the engine, though the aluminum blocks arent as robust as the cast iron blocks. Compression and leak down tests are paramount, fluids like brake and power steering, etc should be looked at. DRC definitely should be looked at, suspension and subframe bushings, cv's, all moving parts basically are at their possible point of replacement. That being said, a refresh goes a long way, and you have to ask if 2/3 of the mileage having unknown history is a worthy risk? Interior and body panel condition is a huge one as well, mechanically, these cars are straightforward, but interior bits and body panels being bespoke to the RS4 are insane money.

Mine is at 161K right now. Got it from original owner, bone stock, no record, no PPI. Replaced starter right after (experience delay start). DRC is gone (clunk like hell), still looking for for C/O. Still so much fun to drive.

damn, you may be the highest mileage around here!? Its good to hear, I'm hoping to keep mine for a long time, and turning it in to a track car or drag eventually.

Weren't you going to sell last year? Good to hear your gonna keep it. I was planning on keeping mine for a long time but I think mine is gonna sell next week, I have a buyer in Troutdale that has committed, we shall see though if he follows through. I want a 993 or a decent E30 M3, both next on my bucket list. Who knows though the RS might stay put.

Well I decided to buy it, I'll post some pics when it shows up - 134k miles. Car is in pretty spectacular shape and currently owned by an Audi master mechanic.

    I purchased my 2007 in 2011 with roughly 70,000kms (44K MI), now I'm at 225,000kms (140K MI)

I've seen a fair share of issues, but I still love this car

    -Replaced all injectors
    -Replaced both HPFP
-Replaced Oil Cooler and Both Lines
-Replaced DRC with coilovers after DRC failure
    -Replaced Engine Mounts
-Replaced all O2 sensors (This seemed to be more of an issue once aftermarket exhaust was installed)
-Replaced front upper control arms (twice)
    -Replaced hood strut
    -Replaced both front axles
-Performed 2 carbon cleans. Tried to minimize build up with BG products injection cleaner every other oil service.
    -Replaced MAF
    -Replaced coolant reservoir

    Then maintenance stuff
    -Fuel filter
    -Spark plugs
    -Trans fluid
    -Rear Diff fluid
    -Brake fluid
-Brakes all around a couple times

The one thing I still don't understand is that I've yet to change my clutch. Either the previous owner had it done before 44K MI which seems unlikely, or I'm still running on the factory clutch, which also seems unlikely.

Car seems to be running great now and I'm very happy with the way it's been working. Its sometimes a nuisance to work through all these issues, but when you do, it is just such a blast to drive. Lately been contemplating getting out of it or driving it into the ground. Its still an awesome car in good shape. Its a tough call.

Mine is at 120k, and I believe I am still on the stock clutch as well (even though i have a stack of records, there's nothing stating that the clutch was changed). I don't doubt that you're still on your original!

That's pretty crazy and not something I would have expected when I bought the car. I'm just waiting for any day now for the clutch to give up

I do think if people are trying to get out of it, this is the year. I've contemplated it a few times, riding in newer cars and some fun cars coming out (Focus RS, Golf R, S3, S6 etc). But learning my lesson in the "grass is always greener" with car buying, I'm trying to hold on to my RS4 until the B9 RS4 hits the US market and see how it is.

I can always list gripes about my RS4, but that will go with any car. Unfortunately I do not have the luxury of extra space to have a DD and a race car, so finding a vehicle that does everything is pretty much impossible, which the RS4 is as close as it gets right now.

Exactly how I feel. I've been lucky enough to drive some great vehicles, and after a little while of driving those, I always find myself missing the RS4. I feel like no matter when I replace it, I will end up missing the hell out of it.

184.000 and I bet its better shape than most other RS4s around. Bought from the original owner at 180. He had a daily commute of around 150 miles. Did a PPI and compression test, all checked out. Went with coilovers since DRC would go out at some point, OEM rotors and some other stuff. Getting ready for a new carbon cleaning soon. So much fun to drive!!!! Love it!

I just broke 100k. Looking great and running strong, on and off the track. Sure, it costs money to maintain, but the smiles/$ are worth it. Happy to hear that even at 180k the car is solid as I don't see myself selling it any time soon!

What wheels? Niche? 20x9 ? Looks good - the clutch is probably stock. Most people don't buy a RS4 and beat on the clutch.....maybe I'm wrong.

Bought the car finally last week- I'll post up photos once it's detailed - It needs some springs or coilovers just for height, but the DRC is working, car runs great, feels great, and is a lot of fun to drive, and coming from a guy that has had a bunch of 1000whp cars, that says a lot - this car is far and away one of the best driving cars I've owned.

Car is getting a full paint correct and detail, I'll post some photos when it's done. Paint was in pretty bad shape, clearly had been left outside for the past couple years, but it's cleaning up very nicely.

I'm correcting mine as soon as we have a few days above freezing, 3 step polish, sealing with Dr Beasely's Nano Resin, and topped off with some good carnauba wax. I love exterior detailing. Its such a satisfying process and results are awesome!

I pay someone to do it, I just don't have the patience to do it personally, the car turned out great, but the paint is still not an awesome shape, the previous owner was not good for the car's exterior - it was parked out side and left dirty for long periods of time - even with the paint correction and high grit wet sand there are still artifacts in the paint and evidence of bird bombs, you have to really look to see them but I can, it does however look 100x better.

Can you not attach images here? I put all my images on drop box but apparently it doesn't like the link format.... Best I can do is the link below to a google photo.
