How do I keep doors locked/kid-friendly when driving??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok so I have a little unanticipated problem. My toddler opened the door (from a car seat of course) when we were driving. Obviously that was pretty scary. So I figured ok no big deal, let me just make sure that the door is on "locked" all the time (with the red light on). Guess what - he opened it again while it was presumably locked! Is this normal? Is there a way to make sure that all doors are locked when it motion and can only be unlocked by the driver? I hope so... What am I doing wrong?

    Thank you!

Right, so I press "lock" on the driver's door, which is what I assume is what it is, it does turn on red and STILL all others doors can be opened by pulling on the thing when I am driving. Does that mean something is off with electronics?

    No it's nothing electrical actually.
When you open the back door, on the lock hinge there is a little hidden key insert.

On the side of the door (when opened) turn the child lock switch using the car key (metal key).

FYI this exist on every four door car I've ever encountered made within the last 20yrs.
Life has taught me never try to make something idiot proof, they'll simply come up with a better idiot.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
I have neither the time, nor the crayons to explain this to you properly.

the rear doors have child locks on them

open the rear doors , look at the edge below the latching mechanism . the is a round cut out , with a slotted insert. You turn the insert with a screw driver, and the door can not be open from the inside. It can only be opened from the outside if is not locked byhe power door locks. But kids can not open the door from inside if yo have set it up

Aha! Awesome, thank you! Maybe I should read the manual one day :) lol

Since we've had the kid, the only other car experience was with my wife's Acura MDX and there you just lock with the lock button on the driver's door and that's it. I am surprised it has to be done manually like that. But fine, this is good to know! Will do that.

    RTFM.

The fact you can open the doors while "locked" is a safety feature. Its a mechanical lock release in the case of electronic failure. You pull once and it unlocks the door, pull it a second time and it will open the door.

Your Acura probably had an actual mechanical switch that could be used to unlock the door without using the electronic button (thats how my parents TSX is. There is nothing like that on the Audi, which is why they use the door handle.

Your Acura has the same child lock feature on it, because, as someone said, just about every car for 20 years has had this feature, you just probably never used it since your kid didnt know how to unlock the door. Pulling a door handle is a lot easier.

Also, if you're like me and I like them engaged at all times, even with tween's in the house who are smart to figure it out, I put a small piece of electrical tape over mine that I cut into a circle about the size of quarter and covered it up.

The reason being is my son who hates that I have them engaged will be a smart butt now and then and disengage it. Now it's harder to do and honestly he doesn't even know where the switch is as he hasn't put it together with the fact that I covered it up

Not only is it safer for the kids, but it saves me from having one of them opening the door into another car.
