Changing rear shocks and noticed this. What does it do? Why is there a filter?

Looks like something for the fuel vapors from the tank...but Im also interested as Im not certain.. Almost looks like it should be shielded or covered.

That is the leak detection filter. ECShttps://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...ter/8d0906321/. Not sure if there's a cover on it....don't remember seeing that when installing coilovers, although I left the wheel liner in. It probably just sits behind there.

Any suggestion on replacement intervals? or possible MPG gains of changing it?

The filter is connected to the LDP. It's purpose is to filter the air that gets sucked through the charcoal canister when the N80 Evap control valve opens to purge the canister of the accumulated hydrocarbon vapors. It will not have any effect on your gas mileage. If it gets clogged up the N80 will no longer be able to purge the canister and you will get a CEL for incorrect flow through the Evap purge cycle.
