Question RS4 OWNERS: are you interested in a 1-piece replacement rotor option?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
we’re in the midst of developing our very own casting for the first time, from the ground up...the RS4 was going go be the first model.
there is literally nothing available aftermarket, as you know (other than the ECS/JHM 2-piece units) and we want to help this market.
...we're asked multiple times a week and have had to turn people down for years.

we would love your opinion on this, but please know we are NOT interested/willing to do 2-piece units. it's not our business.
BUT, these will be floating style...non-modular but the ring is attached to the hub with internal pins. from what we've experienced, it has similar cooling properties and weight savings.

rather than doing an expensive, modular 2-piece like OEM, we are going to offer it in a 1-piece, cast replacement…OE fit, direct swap, plug n’ play.
it will be considerably cheaper than OEM replacements (half the price) and will be available in blank form, so we can machine them in any of our 17 patterns.
they will come standard with our Premium High Carbon (Black Hub & Vent) G4000 metallurgy and the hubs can be coated any color you'd like, per usual.

coming from a car with 2-piece, what is your take on that?
our reasoning is of course price…but in reality it’s what we feel is also all the car needs.
2-piece is great for a dedicated track cars, but the weight savings of 2-piece isn’t really something most anyone can notice if driven as the street car it is.
for normal daily driving and occasional track days, from our experience, noone out there can truly feel/utilize this "unsprung" weight with brakes on a daily driver that people have argued for ages.
more importantly, it is hardly worth the extra money for these costly discs or the severely shorter lifespan of 2-piece LW alternatives for that matter...

over our 10 years in business and close to the same many years of the RS4 having been around, we have seen the need for a reasonably priced alternative...after-all this is a wear item, replacement part for a street car.
these cars are becoming far more affordable but still just as desirable, so why not offer a quality brake rotor (with the options AR is known for) for this deprived market?

we have not determined final weights as of yet, as the molds are not even made yet, but we will have that info if we move forward.

at AR we are all about machined rotors...
slotting dissipates heat, helps avoid glazing, and adds bite...thus, we've focused most of our exclusive patterns around slotting (our double slotting specifically, which we're known for, was designed & tested in many track & endurance race scenarios) to not only keep your brakes cooler when put to the test, but look good with unique, customizable ways of implementing them on factory spec rotors.*these rotors will be able to take advantage of that.

    also, posted in our FAQ's:

"what is premium grade G4000 high carbon iron?"

we have started to offer a premium grade cast iron option, available for most all applications. standard grade G3000 is great and more than sufficient for most any use, but in some scenario's, a stronger iron is beneficial. reports of longer lasting rotors have been found, ideal for high mileage cars, haulers, or even heavy track goers who really beat up their brakes. it also greatly reduces the worry of pad squeal in cases of high friction with high performance brake pads. the harder iron is stronger and fights warping and cracking concerns, and higher carbon & chromium levels aid in oxidation resistance. another great benefit to the G4000 upgrade, is the price includes a premium black coating on the rotor at no charge.
    would love you thoughts.
I appreciate your time & opinion, I look forward to hearing what you have to say.
    thanks,
    -a

p.s. if we have enough interest, we will be doing a pre-sale group buy...
p.s.s. no we do not need a test car, nor will we be offering discounted "development" sets, but thanks!

I'd think most owners don't want to downgrade on a car like the RS. Pair that with the fact that there are a couple of rotor ring options that are lighter than OEM and directionally veined for much less money than OEM ($470- $700), and I don't really see a thriving market here.

I could see some people desiring them though, so if your cost is low enough- it wouldn't be a bad option to offer! 17Z and 18Z rotors for the B5/B6/B7/C5 could also be BIG hits! No one offers a true off the shelf option in one-piece.

What Hayden said. We already have other rotor hat options, and you can typically get a couple uses out of them meaning we just need to buy rings.

I think the 17z, 18z, and possibly a 1 piece TTRS rotor for the b5/6/7/c5 would be a potentially strong aftermarket.

I’d be interested in this as a daily driving option. I’d probably still want a true 2-piece for track use but I put somewhere between 16k and 20k miles on my RS4 every year and these would be a good low cost option for around town work.
