Considering Trading or Selling my e90 335i for B8

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Not sure where to post this but I'm considering trading my 2007 E90 335i for a B8 A4. I think the B8, cosmetically is gorgeous and I'm not really concerned with power at the moment. My 335i needs nothing, is meticulously maintained and I don't need to sell it but its just hard not to go fast in it, its like a sport bike with 4 wheels. I think I want something that's a little more 'chill' for now, a B8 with springs and some OEM 19s and call it a day.

Just trying to find out if this is a rational trade. Seems the 335i has a higher value even though its a year older and there are some 2.0t A4s out there that are pretty much junk due to oil consumption.

Well your 335i is actually 2 years older, considering the B8 ran from 2009+.

IIRC, oil consumption issues were only prevalent in 2009-2010. I'm sure someone who knows much more than I will chime in shortly.

But yes, I'm sure the B8 A4 stock will be slower than your 335i. They do look pretty sharp though. Just depends what you want. Sounds like you want to keep pretty close to your current car's value, but the B9 is just around the corner as well.

I wouldn't consider the oil consumption cars "junk." I had this issue and am perfectly happy with the car (especially since Audi will actually fix your oil consumption issue, at least in my case). Actually the most annoying thing I find about the B8s is specific to 2009s (like my car). The 2009s use actual TPMS sensors. And the OEM ones are a freaking PITA to "learn" for the car. Every time I switch b/w winters and summer wheel/tire setup, I get TPMS errors even though I have TPMS sensors on both sets (not like I'm straining them physically or anything).

Think about that though. I've owned the car for 7 years and that's my only complaint. The B8's are an excellent all around car, whether you live in the city, in the burbs, are 26, or are 50. My previous cars were a lexus IS250, and a E90 325i, and the B8 outclassed both from an overall standpoint. The E90 was a little more engaging, but the B8 is a way more polished, refined vehicle, inside and out (on the inside I would recommend doing a couple cosmetic upgrades to really complete the package).

If you don't want to lose the power of the 335, get a b8 S4.

My stage 2 A4 is quick and has been great through 100,000 miles.

Thanks for the responses guys and @ blbroo I wish I could get a B8 S4 or S5 for that matter but those have a considerably higher value at the moment than my car. As of right now I'm interested in a straight trade.

Keep them both. I have a 2011 Msport 335d and its a monster compared to my allroad...two totally different cars but I really enjoy them both. I want to get a little more punch out of the allroad but don't want to compromise the warranty.

Here's a buyer's guide I started for these cars, hopefully it'll be of some value to you. My general advice would be to shoot for a 2012 Quattro, ideally with a manual and the sport package (for resale value, aesthetics, the best stock driving experience). It won't be as fast as the Bimmer, but they're great cars and aesthetically they're far better than the E9x both inside and out, in my opinion anyway.

Happy to answer any other specific questions also.

I would not get an A4 if you have a 335i. Agree with the notion of getting an S4. The 335 walks all over our 2.0T A4s unless you have a stage 2 tune....and even then its close. I love my allroad so much but my next car will hopefully be an S model or maybe a 340i. I would love a car that's at least 300 hp from the factory.

Make that three people! I have a 2015 S4 and already considering something "sportier", like supercharging an E92 M3

Modded A4s are pretty quick, but you will probably find yourself bored with a base A4. You can find B8 S4s for ~$30k and then go with a dual-pulley stage-II setup if you want to take it to the next level for a few thousand dollars.

I still think that the S3 is fun as hell. A stage 2 S3 is faster than a stage 2 S4 I believe....and a true 500 hp EFR kit is either out or about to be for the Golf R/ S3....should be stupid fast

I am sort of bored with Audi after 12 years of owning them. I was dying to trade the S4 in on an S4 Avant or maybe even an RS4, but now I am sort of "meh" even on those. I was lusting after a Cayman S (someone in the Boston area traded in their S5 on one) but its lack of rear seats is not going to work with a kid.

I think the V8 on the E92 M3 would be a blast, even with the lack of low-end torque. Plus, you can pick one up for ~$35k, and then turn it into a monster for another ~$10k. My friend who had an E92 M3 is calling me to discuss options this afternoon.

P.S. My wife would likely inherit the S4, so we would still have something to drive when it snows.

P.P.S. I probably won't buy another car until moving out of our condo and buying a place in the 'burbs, so I am sort of daydreaming even though a supercharged M3 is in the budget.

Apr did 11.7 on a stage 2 S3 with 93 octane. This was also not with the TCU DSG tune. I think a Stage 2 S3/Golf R with the right tires and TCU tune and the right ambient temps, will come into low 11s easily

LOL. All of this talk of supercharging M3s and the fastest tuned S3/S4 times and the guy just wants a stock A4 to calm down his driving experience.

Haha I know, I know guys. The thing is this will be a daily driver and I plan on getting a proper sports car in the near future soon anyways. I live in San Antonio which is probably one of the worst cities in the world for a driving enthusiast. I have all this power and can't really enjoy it. I've driven a APR tuned A3 2.0t and had a lot of fun. It's like the 2.0t cars want to do short sprints around town while the twin turbo inline 6 just wants to go 160mph on a runway. I more than likely will just keep the 3, I can't really foresee B8 drivers giving up their keys and I can't blame them lol.

Personally, I would keep the 335i until you're ready to swap into something else. The A4 is a wonderful all around car, but is very underwhelming on acceleration, and you will feel that pretty quick going from your 335. The interior is bigger though on the A4 and more comfortable all around, I find. Keep the 3 series and in a few years get a B9 or just get a B8 now and drop a few $k for upgrades.

I would get a CPO A6 3.0T if I were him. Faster than his 335i I believe and trumps it in the categories that Audi does best (design and interior refinement). The interior of the A6 is a work of art

Seeing as how properly maintained your 335i is, I would just keep it. Other than the money you'd save on fuel, and maybe insurance, you'd not be doing much trading in for an A4. Especially if it's a base model one. Asides from the HPFP on the 335i, the engine is pretty bulletproof. Keep it, and buy your sports car first. Then decide what to do with it from there.

I have and RS5 and can definitely understand your logic in getting the A4, I kept my RS but I didn't want to daily it so I picked up a new A4. The b8 2.0 A4 is not a fast car and it's a heavy car. You will miss the gratification you get from mashing the gas and pulling hard. Also be aware that you will not find a strait trade between the 335 and a B8 A4, your best bet it to expect that you will spend a small amount. I would suggest that instead of going for a 2009-2010, that you look only at 2011+ as there have been enhancements such as the LED tails, MMI 3G ect that may be missing on older models.

This. My other option was to trade for a 335i coupe and have that as my sports car, and then look for something else as a daily grinder. I guess with working, going to school full time, and a 60mile round trip daily drive mixed with bumper to bumper traffic I've become desperate for more comfort and refinement opposed to driving a street legal touring car lol. Looks like I'll be staying on the Bavarian side of the fence guys, but then again my wife and I will be selling her 09 C300 for something bigger around this time period next year so we may end up having a B8 or B9 anyways or A63.0T!

    +1 @ shonseb
