    Suspension Upgrade Quality vs. Price

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello Audizine'rs!!

It has come to the time for me to choose my suspension. I have been looking the right suspension for my taste for quite some time now. (read through most of the suspension setup forum)

I'm looking for a coilover setup so I can have a few setups:
-Ride Height adjustability for summer (lower for 19" wheel setup) /winter setup (higher for 18" wheel winter setup)
-Comfort adjustability for comfort DD (soft as stock) / track days.

I was really interested in the H&R street performance system but after seeing so many people complain about the height issue and the bounce aspect, its crossed off.

Now I want to get a quality system as I want this to be a "forever" solution. I want to know if getting the Bilstien pss10's is the best bet or if there are other options to achieve those same aspects. Also for those using that system, how is the ease of adjustment? All feedback is greatly appreciated!!

suspension highly depends on your budget. If you have 2k plus to spend on suspension, Bilstein is definitely a great option.

If you search about PSS10, you'll find mix reviews from someone saying there spring binding causing noise, too thin spring isolators causing noise and people saying it's the best set up. I was also about to get the Bilstein PSS10 but changed my mind after reading some reviews/ complaints here

Ohlins is really the only way to go if you want everything from comfort, quality and built to handle the track. I had them on my B6 best setup I've ever owned. You won't be dissapointed.

I thought that this issue was because of the loose top-hat nut which was later fixed. Correct me if I'm wrong!

I've had my ST coils on for a month now and it's the basic ST coils with pre-set damps on them. Definitely stiffer but not annoying, to me. I paid $600 for all four brand new. I don't track the car though. I will only adjust the height when I swap my 19"s for my 18"s in the winter time.

I've heard amazing things about the Bilstein PSS10's, and definitely the go to coilover if you have a big budget. I have H&R coilovers, and I have had no issues with ride height or it being too bouncey. If anything I find they're a bit stiffer than OEM.

If you want a quality coil over that can be used for street, track, and be easily adjusted for compression/rebound damping on the car you'll be in the $2-3k range and should be looking at Bilstein PSS10s, H&R RSS+, KW V3s, Ohlins, etc.

Most budget coilovers are the 'set and forget' type. They either don't offer adjustable damping or require uninstall to do it which isn't practical. Most also run spring rates suited for street applications and are really too soft for track use. If you do find something moderately priced for track use, it won't be good on the street, or will require uninstall/PITA adjustment making it a hassle to switch between your street and track settings.

If you want it all its going to cost. Its worth it to spend more upfront for better quality, ease of adjustability, and something that can truly handle street and light-track duty if that's your plan.

this thread is all budget...OP needs to figure out what he wants to spend...then suggestions will be more focused and beneficial for his application. I dont track an A4, i dont race it, so budget coils made sense for me. Plus if i had 3k laying around for coils, that means i have 3k laying around for wheels, which means I would be making money, which means i wouldnt be in an A4 lol. #LOGIC

lol, this! I personally don't see a point in tracking an A4, let alone spending $3k+ on coilovers for this car, but mines a daily driver.

S4 or BMW M3, different story.

You get what you pay for. I've been running the PSS10's IRC with module, this allows you to change suspension set ups on the fly.

That's the general consensus I'm getting. With the mechanical adjustment and electronic adjustment being roughly the same price its hard to decide which to go with.

Theres no question about it..... do you want to go under you car everytime you want to change the settings? or be in your warm car and tune your suspension. changing on the fly via button and there's an auto setting which is awesome. It's a no brainer if you want adjustability and Bilstein quality speaks for itself. Keep in mind the extra labour for running wires to each coilover. i've had my pss10's for over 2 years enduring Canadian weather with no issues. One great thing is being able to soften you suspension as the temps drop. Comfy ride quality all year round and you can tune it while driving to get it exactly how you want it.

I wish I could have gone this route. With the falling Canadian dollar the cost of the RideControl Bilsteins just got too crazy. Ended up going with KW V1s.
