I use one. Got this 8-9 years ago on eBay for 35$. Some will say that it will damage the ecu. But I use this tool on many many cars without issues ( jap, us,euro)
    OBD droid scan app.

Tried many time on my b7 . still no issue.
It work as advertised. Get ecu codes and many other info.

Get a cheap OBD II tool for 10$ on eBay and Torque or Carista (though I think Carista has no support for the B7, but Torque does)...

I diagnosed a failing crank shaft position sensor using Torque in 5 minutes last year. Still got charged 1.5 hours "fee" for a diagnosis at the dealer because I was out of town and couldn't fix it myself... Dealers are definitely pathetic...

Same here. Going on 4yrs of a Bluetooth ELM327 in my car. Random check engine lights are no longer an issue, as they can be cleared, checked, etc. Same goes formonitoring things like coolant temp, boost, ignition timing, etc.

Anyone know of a way to use Torque to track misfires before they set a CEL?

Came here to suggest this. $10 for the ELM 327, $5 for torque app, good to go for 90% of the issues with your car.
The other 10% require a Vag com cable and the associated $$$ to buy one.

Thank you all for your input.
I don't really want to be driving around with a laptop and rosstech cable. I am going to use this on multiple vehicles.
So, it's just up to my choice what I want to spend.
Now, do you need to leave it plugged in to the OBDII socket?

It puts a small drain on your battery. You have to decide if the hassle of unplugging is worth saving some battery. Also get a wifi version if you want to use the gauges.

The actual Scantool brand ones I believe output a much higher refresh rate even over bluetooth...not sure on that though.

I recently bought this paired with an Android phone using Torque:

    http://www.amazon.com/BAFX-Products-...rds=bafx+odbii

It has done its job so far with clearing a CEL for P2181. If you end up using Torque, you can set up custom gauges to monitor things like oil temp/pressure and boost etc.

Does this work just as a scan tool or can you customize certain settings as well? (i.e. seat bell chime delete, remove bulb out errors, one touch unlock)

The hardware should work but you will probably need the Carista software app to change seat belt chime delete, etc. Research Carista to see if it will work on your car.

You can't do customization on B7s with Carista. The ELM327 readers don't support the protocol used in the B7, apparently.

No, torque pro doesn't do any of that stuff. As far as I know only VCDS and the foxwell scan tool can do the coding.

The unit creates a small wifi network and you just join it.

Does the ELM work with DashCommand on iOS? Or what are people using on iOS? This looks cool.

False. The ELM327 is just a communication device. You can call it the middle man between the cars computer and your computer phone or whatever. Real reason is accessing the parameters and such is kept proprietary.

I have both bluetooth pairing between the car and with the ELM327 running concurently. I've even gone so far as to take a phone call while logging without any ill effects. Works just fine.

    Just quoting them:
"The 07 A4s (B7) us an older communication protocol that's not supported by standard ELM327 hardware. So we won't be able to do it with this hardware, sorry. If at some point we develop a different type of hardware adapter, it may be possible, but it won't happen in the near future."

Just keep in mind that the Bluetooth ELM 327 will not work with IOS devices so you would need the wifi version if using IOS. For some reason apple keeps the Bluetooth capability on lockdown. I use it with my android tablet with no issues.

There's one called the Carista that works with both android (Bluetooth) AND iPhone (wifi). It's kinda pricey at $40 but it's a lot smaller and prettier than the other ones out there too. That's the one I have and it works beautifully.

The ELM327 is awesome I got it for $11.

Torque is a great app for $5

I just got a new app 2 weeks ago. It's $13 but has full DTCs for every make and model car.

For Audi's they allow you access to the the ECU and TCU.

Here is the link to the PlayStore. I highly recommend it. It's simple and gives you all Audi database.

It is without a doubt the best OBD2 app.

For those with iPhones, which obd2 wifi device did you get? And are you able to read coolant/oil temps as well as boost levels?

I'm having trouble sorting between all the different obd2 wifi vs elm327 wifi ones for sale...

There are actually a couple of bluetooth ones that work with the iPhone. Apple requires that bluetooth accessories like these use only Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, which most OBD devices don't. However there are two good ones that use Bluetooth LE and are iPhone certified. The one I use is called the LELink, and is available on amazon here:

I used to use a generic WiFi one before i got the LELink and I found that the LELink one connects much faster and has a slightly lower latency in the measurements, not to mention the much lower power consumption. I actually used to end up unplugging the wifi dongle because it would interfere with my remote door lock/unlock and reduce the remote range to a few feet from the car. The bluetooth dongles also solve this problem, so i'd recommend spending a little more and getting the Bluetooth one.

Also in case anyone was wondering, I found OBD Fusion to be my favorite application, but most all of the popular ones support the bluetooth low energy dongles too.

Came here to say I bought the $35 lelink obd2 Bluetooth le scanner and the $10 OBD fusion app for my iphone6. Works as described and you can even sync logs via Dropbox to view on your computer.

Does anyone know if our car monitors oil temp? That sensor seems to be inactive or not working for me

I don't think we can get oil temps. Torque Pro doesn't read them either.

OBDLink MX and tried all sorts of Apps on my Android phone and OBDWiz on my laptop and nothing seems to allow me to do Adaptations or the like. Carista says its not compatible with my MX. was going to look into VCDS-Lite as an option but can't find anyone that says it connects. so did I buy the wrong adapter? I want to be able to scan and perform a few mods like window function with remote and EPB for brake job. I'm looking for suggestions on what I should look into using with my MX.

I can't believe how hard it is to find answers to this. bits and pieces all over this website but nothing specific about my setup. (07 S6 V10).
