What is this? What does it do?

At first on start up this thing makes a really loud whining noise. After about two minutes or so it goes away. What is it? What does it do? Should it be making noise?

    Thanks

Thanks! Any idea on whether or not it's supposed to whine on start up?

It does make a noise on startup, but if it is really loud the brushes are probably shot. So the pump is probably failing.

It's an air pump, it might sound like a hair-dryer or something like that. But more muffled.

For about 1-2 minutes when cold. It can make more or less noise, but has ABSOLUTELY no impact on how your car runs or reliability.
You could smash that with a hammer, bust 2" holes in it. You'd get a CEL, but it basically helps warm up cats on startup, nothing else.

You can get a tune to defeat the MIL and delete that pump and the two valves on either side in the back of the engine (round and silver on top with corrugated hose running between the two of them). Cost of tune varies and depends on how nice the tuner is feeling. Usually a nice reason to go stage I since you're cracking into the ECU. Cost of the delete is a pair of block off plates that cover the holes left in the heads after removing the Kombi valves.

    DIY difficulty: annoying

Patience required: many units of patience (for removing valve allen bolts)

You can rebuild them at your local auto-electric shop for a few dollars

I have a rosstech vcds HEX-USB+CAN Interface and cam lock bar to rent with deposit in the Charlotte area. Like all C5 owners I am looking for local parts!

Just did this to my pump, it had seized and the shaft nut came off. but after replacing the bearings and a good cleaning with some red lock-tite on the shaft and it works great again.
