    Tragedy During Timing Belt Replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I purchased an 03 A6 2.7T Quattro a few weeks ago and got it home to find out......its leaking oil and has been for quite some time. I should have known better when the engine was degreased that someone was up, but I liked the car and the price was right (1,800$). I was able to identify the valve cover is definately leaking and considering the shadiness of the guy I bought it from, I went ahead and purchased the timing belt kit to ensure it doesnt explode on my drive. I was trying to be a cheap ass and decided to do the allen key trick to lock the pulley into place to remove the fan clutch and not spring for the tool. I get it into what I think is a good spot....and when I twist the bolt, I somehow drove the short end of the allen wrench completely through the timing belt cover. Now I have to replace that SOB as well as wait for the fan clutch removal tool from amazon to show up. I suppose all is well as I have to order a washer fluid sensor from amazon anyways since my fill fluid light wont come off.

I should have known this car was too good to be true. I have spent all of 2 hrs driving it, and 1.5 of that was driving it back to my house after purchase. F$&#*%ing craigslist.

Every Audi leaks from every gasket after 10+ years. Cam seals will leak, tensioner gaskets will leak, valve covers, rear main seal, front main seal. So get used to it :)

Tragedy involving a timing belt is usually bent valves, not a hole in the cover.

Mad at seller for being shady, but even if I had known I still would have purchased it. Mad at myself for trying to get away with a trick instead of a tool. Nothing says I can't be mad for both reasons. All the same, worse things could have happened. 100$ is what I'm looking at for a new cover unless I can find one at a pick and pull which is unlikely.

There are tons of 2.7T partouts, pretty sure the timing cover is the same on the 30v 2.8L as well.

    Welcome though :)

Fwiw I've jammed something in the clutch to remove it maybe a dozen times, mistakes happen though. Post up some pics of the car! $1,800 is a nice price. Manual?

Kaane is right, difficult to keep these engines leak-free. Using Elring seals helps though, they're OEM suppliers, but more than that they're excellent quality.

PZ is also right, I came in here expecting a head rebuild haha.

True, a head rebuild is probably what I would expect after reading my title again. Also a good point that there are worse things than having to replace the belt cover. But just because the situation could suck worse....doesnt mean it doesnt suck. I will post photos once the front end is back on and its no longer leaving spots on my garage.

Is Victor Reinz OEM as well? I heard though Made in Germany, it is considered aftermarket by the masses
I'm hoping Elring Cam seals were put in place at the time of my timing belt service

From what I understand VR is not OEM. I have heard good reports about ECStuning.com kits, blau kits, and Elring stuff as well. I am just getting into this so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I have used Victor Reinz gaskets before with no issues, I would use them if I could not locate Elring versions.

I thought the belt must have come off and strangled someone by the title.
I have a rosstech vcds HEX-USB+CAN Interface and cam lock bar to rent with deposit in the Charlotte area. Like all C5 owners I am looking for local parts!
