    Car overheated on a 2010 CPO s4

I drive a CPO 2010 Audi S4, MT, stock with only intake and exhaust at 68K miles currently. Car was bought August of 2014 with 44k miles and have warranty until August 2016. I drove the car around the neighborhood for like 20 minutes today, stopping by couple places and as I was pulling up to my house a warning sign popped up on my dash saying to check coolant and shut engine off. Luckily this happened in front of my house and not on the highway. Anyway, with the thermostat recall that happen to older production B8 S4's and with this car being a CPO, should this problem have been fixed previously before I even bought the car since its a CPO and a recall was sent out a while back? Also I should be covered under warranty for this correct? Lastly, I have an CTS intake... would the dealer put this back on for me even if i got flagged for a TD1? Chances of a TD1? Thankyou

Depends on you warranty and depends what the problem is - if it is a faulty thermostat or something then yes most warranties will cover it. If you didn't check your coolant levels and it ran dry and caused damage you won't be covered.

I don't believe all 2010s were covered under the TSB. If yours was, then I would say it should have been performed but the failure is covered under CPO anyway. Surprising but lucky that your warranty is still valid since most 2010s were put into service in late 2009.

I would not worry about TD1.

If you are cpo you are probably covered. Did it overheat or did the light just pop up? Just because the check coolant light popped up does not mean the car overheated.

When i looked down at the cluster, the temp gauge was up to Hot and fan was blowing at max. Coolant levels were within normal limits without any signs of leaks.

Most likely it is the thermostat.

My 2011 S4 thermostat was replaced by the recall at around 5k miles.

The thermostat failed four years later at 34k miles. Seems to be common for the thermostat to fail again in 30k-35k miles.

My car had no warning other than the beep, red light & announcement on the dash, since it was a hot day and the AC was already on.

Even the later design revisions of the thermostats don't seem to last very long. I don't think Audi has really fixed this problem.....I suspect everybodies thermostat will fail every 50,000 to 70,000 miles...

Definitely sounds like thermostat. I also had my 2012 replaced a couple years back with the same symptoms.

so i got my car towed to the dealership and the service advisor told me that they couldn't find no faults when it was scanned and that it did not overheat when they took it out for a test drive. Can't they just replace my thermostat because thats the reason why I brought it in?

Looking at your OP, you never actually said that it overheated, despite your title.

Did your gauge show that it overheated? If not, who's to say your thermostat is faulty?

Given the track record of the T-stat, you would think they would, but no, they won't. It's going to go, just a matter of when, best case scenario is that it dies on your way out of their parking lot.

sorrry about that, i did mention it to JoshDub's reply and wrote "When i looked down at the cluster, the temp gauge was up to Hot and fan was blowing at max. Coolant levels were within normal limits without any signs of leaks."

How long did the test drive it for? I had the same thing happen, and it was the T-Stat. But it would run just fine for close to 10 miles before it overheated again and I got the warnings. I can't remember if my car had any codes though. I had to replace mine at 38k miles.

Interesting. I didn't realize they were prone to filing again. My '11 had it replaced at around 25K and now I'm at 62K, thanks for the heads up.

Time to consider changing the thermostat again.

Mine failed at about 30k miles after the thermostat recall, when the dealer put in a new thermostat.
