Grinded first gear now hard to shift

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I reved my car high in nuetral, then I put it in first gear, and it grinded pretty badly. When this happened the shifter was all messed up, and wouldn't let me shift at all. Then trying to fix it, it grinded again, and now it will let me shift but it's difficult to get into first second and out of second into 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th are all easy to get into. Could the shifter just need to be repositions, or is the transmission messed up now.
Car has 78k miles it's stock 4k miles on rs4 clutch, pilot bearing, resurfaced original flywheel.
    Thanks

Do stupid things win stupid prizes.

In short 1,2 are probably due for a rebuild. Common issue on 01e. I'm sure people that have done it or had similar issues Will chime in

Yeah i know, I just took it for a drive and, first is ok, but still feels wierd. Second is really the struggle getting into second and out of second.

sometimes if you drive it gently it can get better, but either way you are on borrowed time. You will eventually need to replaced the 1-2 collar.

You could certainly try realigning the shifter, as its free to do, but with the 1-2 collar being so common on this platform, that is more than likely what is going on, especially since it only occurred after an initial grinding incident.

+1. It'l get progressively better, til the next mis shift. The next mis shift will be much harder to free up.

The damage is likely done but you can take it easy and nurse it along.

I grind into reverse all the time. No amount of shifter adjustment will get rid of it

Yes Scotty up above has them I think.
it looks like jhm has discontinued or unlisted them. I believe they ran 695 from jhm when they were listed on site. Best of luck I think I saw one in classifieds recently for a good price.

Exactly what happened to me. It wouldn't go into second for a month or so then one day I tried it and it went no problem at all... That lasted about 2 weeks then no first or second. The shift collar for 1-2 was hung up and required a rebuld

From what I've gathered the kits from scotty offer oem parts and are supposed to be more reliable than the aftermarket alternatives. Was looking to buy another transmission and heard that the oem parts were better from 3 different sources

Yea, I drove on a bad collar for like 6 months lol. A rebuild is inevitable.

If you can work the shifter in and out of gear enough, it will get a little better. Just be careful, because one bad shift and you're back where you started (but worse).
