Cams skipping teeth in opposite directions??

Hi, I posted the in vwvortex but didn't get any replies so I'll try here.

I have A 09 Jetta with a 2.0Tsi that I just bought it has 129,000 miles on it. And it has the 000022/p0016 code and about half the power it should have. I figured the chain tentioner was going out and possibly jumped a tooth although there was no noise on startup.
So this morning I replaced the tentioner, the old did not seem any weaker than the new one. After getting everything back together I still have the code.
I know it's supposed to be a mechanical timing issue but with the code on it cranks for about 5 seconds before starting and the intake cam is stuck at 5.9 (g40). When I clear the code the cam goes to 0.0 and it fires right up but immediately goes to 5.9 and stays there regardless of rpm. Has anyone found a fix for this? I've found threads where people had the same issue but never posted the solution.

Here's a picture of the rpms G28 and intake cam timing.

    Edit

I pulled the top cover and found this (see pic)
It looks like each cam skipped a tooth in opposite directions according to the dark links. How would that have happened?

Have you tried rotating the crank to TDC and compared timing marks?

My lower timing cover had a mark to align the crank pulley to where the cam arrows were both at 12 o clock. This would show which cam is out of sync, we typically see the exhaust cam skip as the intake cam is on the "pulling side" of the chain and usually under tension where the exhaust cam valve springs and make it jump when the chain is slack. The 3 colored plates only align with their respective marks once every X number of turns so you might not be able to use the colored links to tell which is off without the lower cover off. Also worth checking while there is the cam bridge. Remove it and check the back side for a strainer screen. Also check the cam surfaces now exposed for scoring. The screen can disintegrate and go into the oil passageway blocking oil flow or even having bis of screen make their way to the cam surface. The intake cam advance also gets the oil it needs to advance thru this passage and is controlled by the solenoid on the upper cam cover. See if the center plunger on the front of the intake cam moves smoothly in and out. When the tensioner was replaced did you verify all 3 colored plates were on the timing marks?

Cams skipping teeth in opposite directions??

If you look closely at the last picture you can see the dark links on each side of the timing marks. So it looks like each is off one tooth.

I'll be pulling the bottom cover again Monday so I be able to see more then.

Welcome to my hell buddy; I got tons of info on my thread: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...-Now-with-Pics

Does your tensioner have the same visible damage like mine that I took pics of?

Once the timing jumps, you have to correct it. Need to pull both top and bottom front covers, get piston #1 at TDC, ensure crank marks line up properly with the grey link on the crank, then you can align the cam sprockets properly to each one's grey link

Problem solved. Each cam was off on link to the middle or towards each other. The tentioner I removed was not bad but there was evidence of the chain hitting the cover so I'm wondering if someone changed the tentioner and didn't keep the chain tight allowing the cams to rotate??
Either way it's running great now.

Good deal - glad I could help.

If the chain hit the cover, then the tensioner had to have failed. Do you have pics of your tensioner?

I don't have any pics right now but the tentioner that I removed retaining clip and catch are still good. So I'm thinking the original one was replaced and the timing not checked and fixed.

If that tensioner has the clip and pawl / "catch plate", then it will eventually die over time. That tensioner design is the one that fails - there is a newer replacement.

Yeah I put in the new K tentioner.
