Is it something wrong with my cam

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I replace a new intake cam

Here is the follower at 2500 miles

So I replace a new and here is this one I just took out today close to 4k on it.

    Cam lobe

The cam seems like fine. What exactly wrong here is it lack of lubrication? Am I missing something? Oil use is 5w40

Its hard to tell, that does seem like a quick wear time, and are you sure that cam is fine? Looks a bit scored, but again, hard to tell on pics.

Wear time also depends on driving style. As long as the cam lobe still looks polished and no rough lines in it then you're O.K.

Cam looks fine to me. Do you have an upgraded HPFP? I do and I replace my follower every ~10k miles because it wears about as fast as yours seems to.

No I'm on stock pump. That's kinda fast wear for stock pump. I have to keep an eye on it after few thousand miles. I really don't drive hard on this car either.

Good question I got that thinking too. I went to this shop got good rep around here for audi. It's 5w40 but don't know what brand it is come to thinking of it I remember saw those oil they put in the shop but never heard of that brand. I forgot the name but no one here mentioned the brand b4 I'm guessing some cheap brand. I usually use mobile 0w40 but I was close to that shop so used them. It might be the oil is not good for metal to metal friction. So guess it's the oil problem?

If it's fuchs and you had 5w40 then supersyn is their 5w40 oil. The stuff is the same branding as Exxon supersyn. Apparently it's a PAO oil; not sure if it's a group 4 or group 3 but I wouldn't doubt it to be just a group 3 with PAO blended in. Nevertheless, it's a good oil.

hmm this is a good one .. oil looks to be of decent quality , no obvious blemish on the cam . it is a stock HPFP right ? not an upgraded one ?

definitely looks like a lot of wear on that tappet though . Id be tempted to take that timing cover off and have a closer look in there.

I'll just have to inspect it in few thousand miles and see how it look. I would be worried to open the timing cover don't want to see something wrong with it bc those are new camshaft and new pump. It was installed in there 6k miles only

was it an Audi tappet or aftermarket ?
the other thing that i fond out was all the marking and scratches around the none raised area of the tappet in the first pic , makes you think something is flying around in there.
