    Non res Milltek drone question

    Yay I just put a deposit to buy an S7 and thinking of mods already! When I had my s5, I had a miltek non-resonated exhaust. I loved it and it was loud, but not too loud. I had a manual and at low RPMs it would drone (to my ears) so I found this metallic bubble wrap looking attic insulation that someone on the forums mentioned and insulated my trunk and it sounded great.

    Well the s7 has an automatic which I believe drones more AND it has a larger trunk to increase the sound. Long shot, but anyone here had an s5 with milltek and now an s7? Is the drone loud?

    Anyone insulate the s7 trunk and it decreased drone?

    I have a milltek non-res valvesonic on my stage 1 S7. ZERO drone.. My only complaint is I want to hear it more in the cockpit (noise cancelling and sound deadening mute it). I've actually had my wife drive it with me in the other car trailing just so I could gauge it how the rest of the world hears it. Sounds amazeballs. From the drivers seat though I still want more sound, but everyone outside is getting a symphony of Audi.

    tl;dr; zero drone, sounds amazing

    Milltek resonated valvesonic with high flow cats/DPs does drone in 4cyl mode only, esp. between 60-70 mph and from 36-42 mph, and has fairly heavy vibrations around 36-42 mph again only in 4cyl mode.

    I haven't tried insulating the trunk or anything like that to address the noise. Interested to hear if anyone had success with that.

    I've got the same setup and I concur with this statement. Sounds insane except for the drone in the areas mentioned ^. I was thinking my next move would be to buy a set of front resonators and have them welded in since I have the non res downpipes. Although lining the trunk sounds like a viable option.

    Dynamat would be better but it's heavy. This attic insulation thing is really light and works really well.

    I just wonder how working on the trunk alone would impact the undesirable sound/feeling since I am guessing that some of it is related to the presence of the modified DPs or 'high flow' cats themselves (or no cats in madyspop's case). Insulating the car further back at the trunk might be too distal from the actual point that the sound originates from? Not sure if that makes sense. I don't' think the sound is solely entering the car from the trunk but maybe also from directly under the driver at the downpipe, midpipe, etc.

    Well in my s5, I would hear it louder in the back seat versus the front. I believed that the trunk would resonate and increase the noise so I insulated the wheel well and it sounded less drone.

    I wonder if the s7 trunk would resonate the noise more since it is bigger and since it is a hatch, the hatch cover may be thinner than the rear deck cover in the s5 and let more noise through

    Did you just pull the trunk panels and cut and place the material or did you use adhesive to secure it in place? How much of the trunk area did you actually do, any pics by chance?

    I pulled the floor above the spare tire up and used gorilla tape to tape the insulation all around there. It took me probably 15 mins to do.

    It looks like this and prob cost 10 bucks at home depot.

    I did the entire trunk floor and spare wheel well. I want to do the sides and rear wheel wells but the panels look impossible to get off. I'll report back once I actually go for a drive. If this doesn't work I'm for sure getting the front resonators and having them put in.

    Interested in your results as well. I definitely get drone, particularly in D mode - and some vibrations as well. I've been meaning to have another shop look and see if it's touching the belly pan or the body somewhere. The sound in S-mode is perfection.

    I did notice a bit of a decrease in sound believe it or not. Still haven't been on the highway but I'l do that tomorrow. I think the best thing to do in order to get this method to be effective would be to pull the rear side panels and do the entire trunk. I plan on doing that once I take a class on how to remove the side panels, it looks to be a bit of a challenge.

    I'll keep updating as I progress through this but ultimately I think just putting resonators in the downpipes will be the only remedy.

    Well I got out not he highway today and I must say I believe the wrapping of the trunk did indeed help a bit with the drone. I think once I pull the side panels and do the entire trunk it'll be even better. I think ultimately using Dynamat or a true deadening material what give the best results. I'm going to source some and do it that way for even better results.

    Milltek guy said s5 droned louder than s7 so I bet insulated a7 sounds great.

    I didn't go with dynamat bc it's really heavy. It must weigh literally 30x or more this if I remember how heavy a box of it was. Maybe 2 or three layers of this

    Great to know! I am excited to hear your results following the more ambitious deadening What will you do with all that extra weight though! Better go on a diet to compensate.

    Well I report on this soon too.

    My s7 comes Monday and I have a milltek non-res exhaust coming. I will have it installed soon and I will insulate as needed and report back also.

    She's already lost a few pounds with the new 21" Lightweight Forgelines going on today. I highly doubt the Dynamat is going to add any weight that wold be noticeable anyway, and even if it did if it kills the drone I'm good to go.

    OK got the Milltek non res installed on my car today.

    Obviously this is subjective, but whoa, you guys got some sensitive ears if this is drone to you :) I had a Milltek non res exhaust on my s5 and inside the car, it was probably 3-4x as loud as this. That's why I had to insulate this. This almost sounds still TOO quiet inside the car. Once I am out of warranty, down pipes, stage 2 tune once available and more noise!

    I like the noise it makes when down shifting. This car now sounds like it should sound like!

    I think it is worse with downpipes. The stock cats must muffle some of the sound.

    And there must be some variation on top of that...i have zero drone with dp's. Perhaps the MMI bypass is at play with mine, though.

    No I have the non res w/o valvesonics. The plugs for the exhaust flaps for MMI were just covered up and wrapped and taped somewhere along the bumper.
