    Cleaning exhaust tips

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
It's hard to keep them looking nice in the winter. I'm wondering what everyone uses to keep your exhaust tips looking nice? I have been using never dull when the weather is nice enough to clean. Is there anything better to use

If you have any build-up, #0000 Steel wool with any cleaner like Adams APC.

WD-40 cuts the exhaust soot well in addition to using the steel wool.

So I'm a huge fan of most of the P21S products. Especially their wheel cleaner. As I'm going around the car spraying the wheels, I hit the tips with the same wheel cleaner.

After it soaks a bit, I find a brush takes the soot right off.

i prefer to use 0000 and a metal polish.. rather than an APC...once most of the build up is gone. i use a metal polish with a microfiber. Look good.

Once they are clean use carbon collective's product to make it easier to clean. I just picked some up but haven't used it yet. Soot is supposed to wipe right off

Absolutely, I would say you could get about 90% of that look in 1/4 the time though just with what everyone else recommends, or P21S Polishing Soap.

This... steel wool and cleaner, then metal polish 1 & 2 after they look factory new and it takes less than 10 minutes for the whole ordeal.

why use a WAX/PROTECTANT when you want to CLEAN/REMOVE something ? use an APC simply and it should be fine. True an abrasive could damage the plating, but then since it's black, theres no need to scrub as hard than a shiny reflective metal.. so APC should do the trick just fine.

Make sure not to ever use one of those green pads used in kitchens. They take the finish right off. Ask me how I know, lol. One thing cool though is I was able to order brand new replacement tips from AWE for just $50.00. They are beautiful!

I had a friend that thought he could use one of those on his paint and killed his hood. You got a deal on those tips. A guy the other day on here called to get a set and awe told him 300.

When stated this way yes, it does seem dumb lol. I had some laying around & figured why not see what happens? It did better than AWE's recommended soap / water routine.

Regarding your recommendation is this what you're using & if so do you also have the AWE black tip setup?

no i dont as i still have an awe chrome catback waiting to be installed, but as a detailer, this is what i would do if someone came with a black plated exhaust tip. I wouldn't certainly not use a wax to clean it, i can assure you haha.

Good chance it can be saved. Clear coat likely is pretty thin there but hit it with an orange pad and some Meguiar's 101 Foam Cut or 105 series and you'll know in a couple minutes. Once that works, hit it with some polish folllowed by an IPA wipe and and then I'd honestly use two coats of CQuartz or other ceramic coating to seal it up from there.

I wash mine up with some old cheap microfiber and detail spray. Every couple weeks I use the same cheap MF Towels and some basic OTC metal polish. They come out brand new. Keep it simple.

One thing I noticed that my old car had was about a 1/4 hold set back in the tip just after the pipe connected which allowed a good deal of the moisture from initial starts to drip out without staining the tips of the pipes. I don't think our cars have that but it makes me want to take a closer look at them to see if it's possible. They were far enough back that you couldn't see when walking by.

I have been using Eagle One Nevr-Dull for the past year on my chrome AWE exhaust tips and it works pretty well. If I had a fresh start with those exhaust tips (they were two years in service by the time I got around to using any kind of polish on them), I'll bet they would be as clean as the photo 14S4GWM posted. As it stands now, I can get the outside surfaces and outward facing edge of the tip wall relatively shiny so as to give the tips some definition, but there is permanent degradation of the surface on the inside of the tips to get it back to looking new.

I think the big confusion comes from AWE making a statement that only soap and water is to be used, but I believe that statement was a blanket CYA which included their diamond black finish. Meanwhile we have all shown that regular off-the-shelf polishes will work on the standard chrome finish. I think the key is to start this polishing regiment right off the bat with brand new tips, to stay ahead of the carbon buildup and prevent permanent discoloration.

Try hitting it with some no-fume oven cleaner after a drive home from work. Let it sit for 10 minutes then clean the inside with some steel wool.

Collinite Metal Wax works really well. Fast, effective and easy to use even on the most filthy tips. I first learned about it here on AZ.

Glad to hear it worked well for you. I found out about wd-40's ability to cut carbon accidentally, but it's my go to now.

It really was no effort. I had the wool already along with the WD. Didn't take much longer then a normal cleaning. It's my go to now, that soot sticks bad to the chrome. I'm curious to see if the WD will help fight the soot a little. Thanks again for the quick tip.
