OEM Air Filter sheath

Just checked the air filter on my A7 and cleaned out some leaves in the airbox.. Filter itself was very clean.
Curious if anyone has removed the white sheath from around the filter element, or shall we be good boys & girls and assume there is a functional necessity with good reason for it to stay on? :) Just looks so restrictive for some reason...

For what it's worth, I run a k&n without the sheath.

The white filter is a snow filter. When I cleaned my box last time I removed it too. I don't really drive the car when it rains or snows. I think that's when you actually need it.

Any reason why you picked the K&N vs. AWE S-Flo filter?

Honestly? The price and Amazon Prime. I ran a K&N drop in on my S5, and a AFE pro dry filter in my Allroad. I think the difference is so marginal, I'm not going to worry about it. FYI - I did remove plenty of the oil on the filter before installing.
