Cam follower, just replaced it @ 153k

I swapped out my cam follower, car has 153k on it and this appears to the first time anyone's serviced it. I don't think it looks all that bad. Swapped it with a new one just to be safe. I can't post pictures for some reason, maybe because I'm new here? I can send the pics to one of you guys if you could add them in. I'd love to get your opinions. Thanks

At that milage and considering you already put a new one in, toss the old one in the garbage where it belongs.

If that doesn't validate your question, maybe find a picture posted already that looks like yours that you can relate too. But in all honesty, no one will tell you to hold onto it if thats what you're asking.

Completely agree here. I've yet to change mine (86k) but it's so inexpensive and failure prone that it's best to just start new everytime. Looking to do mine in the near future.

Good to hear, I was just looking to see if mine was an anomaly, it look pretty decent, warn but decent. I've seen some pics on here where there were holes smashed through. For the 20 minutes it took to swap, totally worth doing. Thanks guys.

Try putting the pictures in your photo gallery, then you should be able to post to 9the thread.
I replaced my cam follower at 90K and it still looked good, but after all the horror stories I should have done it sooner.

Good to know, I'll try to add pics of it in my profile. Is this forum better suited to use at computer? Seems finicky on my iPhone.

Bought my B7 with 82,K miles on it, so don't know if this is the original. But I removed this at 83,000 miles. Yours look like this?

Even wear is a good sign, time to replace either way me thinks ;)

Mine was replaced by the dealer by the previous owner. How many miles before they go bad?

    From a previous post:
I'm not surprised by the highly variable nature of wear on the follower. My guess is that it depends on a number of factors, and I'll just list a few of the top of my head. 1.) As Schweini stated above the those with the upgraded HPFP are putting at least 30% more force between the cam and follower. That could result in a much greater than 30% wear difference due to the vagaries of hydrodynamic (fluid film) lubrication. 2.) Oil change interval and type of oil could be a factor, although I suspect a small one. 3.) The way the car is driven is likely a big variable. Keep in mind that the pump is activated 1.5 times per revolution of the crank. If you normally drive higher in the RPM range you are putting a lot more cycles on the cam follower that someone that drives like an old lady or someone who short shifts. 4.) Other things that come to mind are trip length, cooling system health, climate you drive in, tracking the car, etc. I'm sure you can think of other factors.

With that my opinion is check/replace as follows:
Stock engine, easy on car - 30K miles
Stock engine, aggressive driver - 25k miles
High performance HPFP, easy on car - 20k miles
High performance HPFP, aggressive driver - 15k miles

It it looks anything like the above picture in post #10 replace immediately

I did. I checked the new one 15K miles later, no black worn off.
