I'm looking at the 2012 year. I read (here!) that year was a good year, and fits into my price range.

That is almost an impossible question to answer, someone could buy a P+ and have prestige options added. Also I think Sline/sport could be added to all 3. Then you have Quattro vs FWD.
I would say you need to tell us what options you are looking for and we will tell you what to buy from that info. Check out the brochure, every option for 2012 is listed here. others years are on that site as well.

Yeah this is an extraordinarily complicated thing... I wish I could have added it to the Buyer's Guide but as was mentioned it varied by year and a lot of things could be obtained with different trim levels as options.

I did my best to give an extremely general overview in that thread, though:

Premium model cars come with halogen headlights unless the lighting package is specified, and some do not have seat heaters. HID/LED headlights can be easily retrofitted into B8s for about $1,000, however B8.5s are more difficult to retrofit. Premium trim B8s have halogen tail lights, while some higher trims/packages (which vary by model year) also came with LED tail lights. These are difficult to retrofit into non-LED cars. B8.5 Premium trim package cars come standard with halogen headlights and tail lights, however higher trim levels (and Premium trim cars with the lighting package) come with HID/LED headlights and full LED tail lights.

For the high-end features and amenities that Audi is known for, Prem+ and Prestige cars are the way to go. Prem+ adds tri-zone climate control, automatic headlights and wipers, bixenon HIDs with LED DRLs, more display options in the gauge screen, and other minor features. It is highly recommended to get a car with Quattro; the FWD/CVT cars are not as high-performance or reliable as the Quattro models with the manual or automatic.

Prestige adds things like multi-colored gauge display screen and parking sensors as standard, but much of what it adds could be added optionally on certain configurations of Prem+.

Hopefully this helps. If you have questions about specific features that you want, we may be able to give better advice of what to target.

Rule of thumb: Prem+ Quattro and Sport Package, preferably with a manual, is the way to go.

Not really, the options & pricing guides are fairly concise. Audiworld has a good record of them. See here.

Can you post a link to the page where that info is stored? I'd like to add them to the Buyer's Guide for every model year.

You just go to Audiworld.com, features, then model guide, which takes you here. It's probably more appropriate to link to that page than the individual documents, since they've done the work of maintaining all that.

Yes, knowing what option that each trim package can be confusing for the first time buyer, for any brand. But, it is easy to search for the Order Guide. All you have to search (google): Type "year, brand, Order Guide", in that order, and there's a good chance that someone has already posted the order guide in pdf.

dscline has already eluded to how to look this up, do a search, it's that easy. Here's what I pulled up in just a few minutes, I'll show the link to make it easy:
