    Painted MMI trim piece

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm posting this after seeing how the rs4 surround is piano black. My question is if anyone has ever done this if they could post pics or even if you haven't done it, could you post some tips on what you would recommend to use for paint?

The reason I am looking to do this is because I currently am building my airlift v2 controller into one of the center air vents and therefore will need to fill in the gaps of the rest of the vent (the controller doesn't block the whole vent) to make it look clean. After doing so I will need to paint it but obviously will never get a paint to match the silver or anything else in the car perfectly. When I paint this, I would prefer to paint the surround as well so that it will match.

Please leave some tips or helpful advice if you have any!

    Thanks!!

Many wrap them in vinyl, but some members have painted them. I haven't done either personally, but from the reading I have done, be sure to prep the surround really well prior to painting it or you risk chips/flakes.

Something tells me it will be difficult to achieve that high-gloss piano black look with a DIY at home job. I would recommend having it done by a professional shop.

I did it on my 2010. I have posted pictures in the distant past, but I could never get really good ones due to lighting issues. I used Rustoleum Universal paint, but I used Satin Black instead of gloss. I actually taped off the panel and sprayed it in place. I was afraid of damageing the panels during the removal. One of the issues of painting the surround black is it shows the dust much more. Also everyone seems to use Gloss black. IMHO, Satin black is a much better match to all the other black surfaces in the interior. Much easier to get a professional;looking finish with satin vs gloss. I only wiped the pieces with alcohol prior to painting and had no chipping issues. Good Luck

I did that, if this is the part you are talking about. I think it looks much better than the silver. FYI, you can have a body shop paint it for ya the Audi paint code is V58 Black High Gloss.

I bet if it came from the factory in piano black, you guys would paint it flat silver.

Have you seen the difference between the silver and the gloss black? The Silver doesn't look as good as the black IMHO, so I changed it. But, continue to be snide.

I second the vinyls wrap. I used. 3M flat black and it matches the flat black of the console perfectly IMHO. And it's entirely removable if you, or the next owner, wants.

The problem with the silver is that it doesn't match anything else in the interior if you have CF , SS or wood and alum trim. Its OK if you have the Alum trim

Thank you guys! I'd like to stay away from vinyl wrapping it Bc I think paint would be much better. And yeah never would I rustoleum my Audi interior haha. Thank you too for whoever posted the paint code!

I chose to use plasti dip because it's easily reversible and it matches the black plastic trim perfectly.

Fwiw, "To each their own" is the saying...
