Alpine restyle units

Hey all. For those that don't know, Alpine makes head units that fit into factory locations and keep the OEM functions that are integrated. I've wanted this really badly for a while, but I don't think they'll ever bring the Audi units to the states. My question is, what complications do you think someone would run into trying to use a Euro spec unit? Maybe it's an impossibility..

You might not be able to pick up radio stations and probably wouldn't have nav support if you bought one doing nav

Yea maps would probably be the biggest issue, I think Japan is the only country with the different radio bands and they make converters now for that.

Theres a guy on the A4 side that got it installed. Couple threads over there I believe.

There is also the Dynavin unit, the BMW guys use them a lot.

I had the N6 in my 09 335i. While it was nice upgrade from the non nav radio, it does not compare to the OEM MMI interface in my S4. It had bugs and lacked quite a few features. I am sure the alpine is a much better route to go.

Its probably not your skills. Maybe it wasn't installed, I thought that's what I remembered seeing though.

This seems like a better option for the guys switching over to 3G MMI when they have the Concert/Symphony system.

I don't care for a touch screen or anything fancy. I would just like a bit more added to the OEM software. Android Auto would be ideal, but even better integration between the steering wheel controls and the MMI controls and a few added features would be nice.

Well screw it. I'll just go Xcarlink with bluetooth and HDMI input, and JL Fix-82. I won't be the same as those lovely Alpine preouts, but it's probably not meant to be. I knew what I was getting into with the radio when I bought this car.

On a side note, it's kind of crazy to me that Alpine has done all this engineering on this unit, but won't bring it to the states. I guess they've done the research to say it wouldn't be profitable.

i wouldn't want a touch screen in the b8 because i feel like you have to lean so far forward to touch the screen

Argh, I can't let myself settle on this. I'm going to try the Alpine. Would the optional DVD player work, or would there be a region specific setting where it wouldn't work?

I'm also going to guess the X701D-A4R is right hand drive, and the X701D-A4L is left.

This is pretty cool. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts once its installed.
