    Battery replacement

Finally got a new Bosch AGM battery installed yesterday, pulled out the original battery, and when I say original, I mean it! Stamped 2/06 build date! I am flat out impressed that the Varta lasted exactly 10 years! That has to be a record. New battery has the engine cranking notably faster, and it feels "healthier" overall. Now to reset the funky intermittent voltage codes and see if any come back!

One possible hiccup, though. The plastic nipple for the battery vent broke off in the old battery when I tried removing it. Has anyone just kept their AGM batteries un vented? Is it an easy thing to replace? Should I not worry about it? I know regular lead acid batteries need a vent so I assume AGM function in the same way... any help is appreciated!

Actually, I think I'm dumb. I just checked the new batt and it has both vents plugged with some pretty difficult to see plastic plugs (shares a case with the lead acid type 49) I don't think I'm going to go prying off these covers, I am sure they would have made the vent accessible if it were necessary. I'll report back if anything blows up.

I might need a new one soonish also.

When replacing the battery, does anything need to be reset or codes entered like for the radio or anything?
Or you can simply put in a new battery and everything should be fine?

Radio possibly, but I don't recall needing my radio code when I installed mine.

You just need to reprogram auto up and down windows, your radio presets might be gone, but it's not a big deal. No special dealer programming necessary such that you couldn't do it at home.

New batteries always come plugged from my experience, unplug the correct side and revent the battery with the hose. I just replaced my original last fall as well.

I looked in the trunk and it is a Varta battery. I couldn't see the date of the battery on the top, is it somewhere on the sides? I really want to know how old this battery is.

It's stamped into the top of the negative terminal.

Just changed mine last weekend... also the original Varta on a 2007. Replaced it with an Autozone Gold AGM for $150 -- product says "Made in German." I believe it is a Johnson Controls battery.

Just FYI - I don't think the Autozone Duralast Gold is AGM. I think their Platinum battery ($184) is though.

I still need to get a new battery for my RS4...dunno what I am waiting for exactly. :)

Their website doesn't have the Gold AGM listed, which has a 5 year warranty and is made in German (believe me I have the battery).

AGM is to prevent leaks in the trunk?

I was just telling someone that my battery is in the trunk, and they raised the point of that being a potential issue since batteries leak acid.

Yes, no spills with AGM. But you get much better performance, longevity, and better recharge with an AGM.

Do you have a model number or any other info so I can make sure I get the same one (in store)? I need to just buck up and replace my nearly 11 year old battery before getting stranded.

I think my is original also, lately seem to be a little slower to start (crank for turn before it fire), need one soon. The nice thing about RS4, no coding needed.

Just popped the trunk to get an idea of the tools needed to change the battery and how to do it.

Other than the the wrench required to take the bolts off the positive and negative terminals, what else do you need to remove?

On the right hand side of the bottom of the battery I see a bolt that has to be removed, which looks like is for the battery casing/brace.

Is it just that single bolt and it just comes out?

    lol, yeah true.

The negative terminal nut has no room to unscrew, there is zero space top/bottom to unscrew it so it will take a while!

But the connection is the same. The Varta 610 402 092 battery looks the same as do all the Group 49 battery posts.
