    What type of oil

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys I'm changing my oil every 10,000 miles and I'm wondering what oil everyone here is using. In the owners manual it doesn't say 5w-30 but it does say vw 502 00 or vw 504 00. I looked that up and if I'm using Mobil 1 I can use 5w-30 or 0w-40. Any difference in which one I use? I live in New Jersey where it can be 10 degrees Fahrenheit or 100 degrees.

Thank you I've actually seen this link I was also wondering whether it makes a difference if I use 5w-30 or 0w-40. I'm most concerned with performance, the car has a tune pulley and intake

You will be fine with 5w30 at your location and with a tune

I use 0w40 and im in Maryland. I use Mobil 1 0w40 in the 5qt jug from Walmart since it was cheap.

I prefer Pennzoil 5W-40 Euro blend. Having done some extensive research on the "Bob the oil guy" website, the sheer strength seemed slightly superior (very close) to the next leading oil; Mobile 1.

Plus, I have always liked Pennzoil.

There is zero loss of oil between changes and I am at 58,000 miles now- I change it every 5k since I bought it at 24k miles.

Recently I was lucky enough to buy 3 new 6 gallon boxes (and a half full one) from my inspection/ tire shop since they no longer use it (now using Valvoline in their shop) and acquired more than 80 quarts of oil at less than $4.50/ qt. .
I know have enough filters and oil for changes on my car through 120,000 miles....lol

Coming from the Subaru world Mobil 1 was the worst you could use because of it breaking down early. I know tons of guys use it here though.

M1 5w30 is not approved and you will void your warranty if dealer knows that. However M1 0w40 is a very good oil (PAO based, 100% synthetic) and won't shear easily at all. As it is super cheap (readily available at wally world, and on amazon there was a deal $27.99 for 6 quarts), I suggest this oil if you can get it easily with good price.

I've been using Liqui Moly 5W-40 with great success on my 2008 S3. How do I know? Well, my engine had to be turned apart due to some valve/piston contact. Maybe due to over reving on a track day. It had around 40k mi of hard driving and everything was perfect lub wise. My mechanic was amazed how nice all ware components looked. We have very mild winters and not very hot summers in Mexico City (lows on the 30's, high on the low 90's) so I can't speak weather wise but this is they oil they use in Germany and I would guess their winters and summers would be similar to yours.

Fellow Subaru world person here as well. I can assure you that the 5W-30 and 0W-40 formulations are very different.

My dealer uses Castrol Syntec 5W-40 for the S4. It's absolute crap. After 5,000 miles, my oil level was down below half way on the MMI. This is also the factory fill for the S4 as well.

Since then, I've started doing my own oil changes in between the AudiCare 10k oil changes, so my oil is changed every 5k now. I've been running Motul Specific 5W-40 with excellent success and zero consumption. For my next AudiCare appointment, I'm going to supply them with my own oil as I truly believe it's that much better than the Castrol they would give me for free. (Since I have AudiCare)

I went with Motul Specific 5-40 synthetic since that's what 034 recommended and my crazy German motorcycle builder swears by it. Fwiw I use redline synthetic (w/added zinc for wear protection) in my ctsV, but I have a big cam/springs/retainers.

Nice. I used to have a cts-V before the audi. Miss the power on the highway. I had a tune pulley intake exhaust injectors plugs. 11.2 at 125 was my best at the track

Mobil one 5w-30 is not approved and will void the warranty? On the technical service bulletin link listed above It looks like it's on the approved list of oils to use.

Thanks. I'll look into the motul. I just called audi to double check and they confirmed like you said that they use the castrol 5w-40. Knock on wood but I haven't had any issues with oil consumption. 2015 s4.

As long as ANY oil used meets the specified requirements of Audi, VW 502 00, it will not void your warranty. I do not know if M1 5w-30 meets this or not. If it does- your warranty would not be compromised.

North American Synthetics are almost always blends. If you are looking for fully synthetic oil that is much better quality go Euro. They have more strict container labeling for synthetic oils. I always use vw502 or 507 because I'm anal, but its pretty much just companies paying to have that title. Not sure how much weight it actually caries

+1 for LiquiMolly (also has easy pour spout ;)

    That's my point, M1 5W30 does not meet VW 502 00 spec.

Those that are approved are Mobil Syst S Special V 5w30 and Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5w30. Not the regular silver 5w30 you usually see.
