    Customize startup/splash screen on MMI

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Anyone has any ideas how to do this on a MMI 3G low unit? It would be real cool to have a picture of your car when the MMI starts! I've seen that it can be done but it's all in German, google translate didn't exactly help much.

    I've seen the customized start up screens and backgrounds with older RNS-E units but would really like to do this with the current hardware as well.

    Here was the google translate of the 1st section, before the trouble shooting starts.

    1. Copy all the root of the SD , should look like , (see picture on your link)

    2. Allow boot MMI , about 2-3min wait ( waiting too short , it may be that the script does not start )

    3. SD stuck in Slot 1 and shortly after the message was to come , " rotary knob move einzuspielen to start-up screen " , the message disappears again

    4. After a short time a message should be " on your own home screen has been successfully imported , MMI please reboot ! " come.

    5. MMI restart with monkey handle ( MENU + knob + button upper right soft key) .

    Done! Rejoice over the new home screen !

    Info : A backup of your old home screens will be created on the SD in the folder " \ backup \ splash screens \ " !
    Do it right, or don't bother.

    Awesome! I want an S6 logo with APR on it

    Has anyone registered an account to get the file link to download?

    Does the SD card have to stay in the slot for this?

    I was able to register

    Here is the DL link:

    Code:
    http://www.share-online.biz/dl/5LFRD44NRQ
    My rough rendition so far (I had to manually create the S6 logo from junk I found on the internet, I'll see if I can get the default S6 image)

    Here's a better one using the stock MMI S6 image as base:

    I can confirm this does indeed work! Here is an album of all the original/backup files directly from the MMI: http://imgur.com/a/kjzRP

    Instructions in English:

    Extract the RAR file. Copy it to a freshly formatted SD card (FAT32). Change the startup_generic.png file if you wish.

    Start your car and let the MMI boot up for 2-3 mins. Insert the SD card into SD1 slot. You will see some sort of german text scroll. Rotate the big knob on the console. The message will go away. Wait a few moments. A new German message will appear. Reboot the MMI by holding down menu+big knob+top right silver/soft button for a couple seconds. If your edited startup_generic file doesn't show when the MMI boots up, you need to open the green/hidden menu, go to car > carcodingvehicle > Select No of Screen > set to 0, again restart MMI and it should show up now.

    Cool. I'll be playing with this at some point and will make a custom screen. I'm thinking of doing something totally different like using the Quattro gecko or other Audi iconic logo. Maybe the old turbo snail or the Cheetah ad. If we can totally customize this, then its a neat feature to unlock for sure.

    Yep! As long as you stick with the designated resolution and file type .PNG (and probably bit-depth, although it seems both 8 and 24 work on the 3GP/MMI High) you can put anything on there.

    Facelift models have an animated startup screen and possibly need a video file. Could this be your problem?

    I did not alter the link, that's exactly as provided from the German forum. As you can see it was uploaded in 2014 according to the website. Not to mention if you look at the files, it is only a binary sh and a sh script file that does nothing more than copy files and delete files from a temporary directory. If there are any viruses it's in the compiled files under /util/ which appear to be largely library files save 'showScreen' (purpose is in the name). Unlikely that there are viruses, and even if there are, there surely would have been a mention of it on the German forum by now (which there wasn't, I read the entire thread). Code from run.sh for future reference:

    Code:
    #!/bin/ksh
    # Определяем название SD-карточки
    sdcard=`ls /mnt|grep sdcard.*t`

    # Полный путь к SD-карте
    SDPath=/mnt/$sdcard

    # Получаем полный доступ к SD-карте
    mount -u $SDPath

    # Вывод картинки старта скрипта
    $SDPath/_utils/showScreen $SDPath/_screens/scriptStart.png

    # Удаляем файл .done (если вдруг остался на карточке с прошлого раза)
    rm -f  $SDPath/.done

    # Создаем файл .started (флаг, что скрипт запущен)
    echo started > $SDPath/.started

    # Получаем полный доступ к EFS
    mount -uw /mnt/efs-system

    #Сохраняем родную картинку
    cp -v -r /mnt/efs-system/etc/splashscreens/* $SDPath/backup/splashscreens/

    #Копируем две картинки в MMI
    cp -v -r $SDPath/splashscreens/* /mnt/efs-system/etc/splashscreens/

    # Вывод картинки окончания работы скрипта
    $SDPath/_utils/showScreen $SDPath/_screens/scriptDone.png

    # Создаем файл .done (флаг, что скрипт отработал)
    echo done > $SDPath/.done

    # Удаляем файл .started (скрипт отработал до конца)
    rm -f  $SDPath/.started

    Yes, it is possible!

    Yes, it is possible to replace your startup screen with the custom one of your choice!
    Script I found is easy to use and (as authors stated) it works for virtually all MMI versions and Audi models. I cannot confirm that but it worked on my S6 2015. Can post more instructions if someone is interested.

    Hubris, do you have a video of this starting up on your screen somewhere? Assume you're not worried about the dealer seeing it, but is there a way to switch back and forth conveniently between your modified startup and the stock setting?

    It will take less than 5 min to switch back (that long because of reboot time). What script does it just moves one image file from SD card to MMI directory and backup existing images on MMI to SD card. So you you can always put back your original screen on MMI using same procedure. Its just moving file from one directory to another on your computer. That's it, nothing fancy.

    Any chance you could zip up the needed files as you have them and send to me? [email protected]. I can post on my site, too, for others to download.

    I think you guys are downloading the wrong file. Those filesharing sites are very tricky and can have rogue advertisements displayed that mimic a download button, then you accidentally download malware. As I said earlier the file is clean. Here is a virus scan from 56 different virus scanners --

    https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/a...is/1461713628/

    I emailed it to S4Per anyway. I have a feeling that he will find whatever he downloaded is a different file.

    @Brooklyn - no video, sorry! Dealer updated some of my ECU modules and it overwrote my splash screen, and I haven't replaced it since then. Yes indeed it can be seen when the car starts up. I am not worried at all about the dealer seeing it. It is no different than them seeing my VAGCOM mods, which don't void any warranties (to date that we know of, anyway). I don't bother changing my DIS screen off the lap timer or disabling the gear display, or reverting any of my other countless mods for dealer appts. I think a splash screen change is innocuous and unlikely to cause you any issues.

    I'm no stranger to sneaky download sites, but believe you're right. The file you sent was all good! I have it posted here for anyone that wants it.

    You need VAGCOM to enable the 'green' or hidden menu. Once it's enabled, you can do it just like the video shows

    Not quite, my green menu does not allow to save selected screen (no update bar at the bottom like in the video, may be different level of access in GM). BUT it's not a problem, one can put custom screen without green menu!

    It's still not working for me.

    My steps: format sd card (fat32) copy extracted file to card. Boot up mmi for 2-3 minutes (always did 3 at least) insert sd card.

    I only get a message that says no playable files. No other message pops up after the waiting for several minutes.

    Any advice on what could be causing the problem?

    Make sure it is formatted as FAT32 not NTFS

    Also make sure you the folders/files are not 'nested' - they should be at the top level exactly as they are zipped up but not within a parent folder. Post a screenshot of your SD Card file contents with the folder path visible.

    EIAlfonso, First check "backup" folder on your SD card after completion. Find the file corresponding to your model: startup-(model).png. Rename your custom image from startup_generic.png to startup-(model).png and run the procedure again from the very beginning using startup-(model).png as your custom screen. Your picture should be in PNG format, 800х480
    PM me if it will not work, I am not far from you.

    Make sure your model name is capitalized. (e.g. mine is "startup-A7.png"

    For those that care, I've updated with english comments
    Code:
    #!/bin/ksh
    # Look for the SD card
    sdcard=`ls /mnt|grep sdcard.*t`

    # Set the SDPath variable
    SDPath=/mnt/$sdcard

    # Clear the mount path
    mount -u $SDPath

    # Show a start screen
    $SDPath/_utils/showScreen $SDPath/_screens/scriptStart.png

    # Remove the .done flag file
    rm -f  $SDPath/.done

    # Create the .started flag file
    echo started > $SDPath/.started

    # Make Read/Write
    mount -uw /mnt/efs-system

    # Backup the current splash screen(s)
    cp -v -r /mnt/efs-system/etc/splashscreens/* $SDPath/backup/splashscreens/

    #*Copy new splash screens for MMI
    cp -v -r $SDPath/splashscreens/* /mnt/efs-system/etc/splashscreens/

    # Show the done screen
    $SDPath/_utils/showScreen $SDPath/_screens/scriptDone.png

    # Create the .done flag file
    echo done > $SDPath/.done

    # Remove the .started flag file
    rm -f  $SDPath/.started
    I didn't like the start and end screens, so I made these up. If you want to use these, make sure to name them the same as the originals after you download them and put them in the folder:

    scriptStart.png

    scriptDone.png

    A little late to the party. Do you still have the file?
