    2003 Allroad starts, then dies...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello,

I have a 2002 Allroad 2.7TT. I had the battery replaced last week and it has since been running fine and starting soooo much better/quicker than it used to. Today, on several attempts in both this morning and this afternoon the car will start up, run for about 3 seconds, and then stop running (kind of a flutterly-death fashion).

The icon with the key comes on when the key is turned on and then turns off and stays off, even after the car dies so I don't think it's the immobilizer (but I could be wrong). The check engine light is, embarrasingly, always on.

I have a friend/mechanic-ish with a code thingie but he is not available until this weekend. I've searched and done a bit of reading but get lost in the technical jargon and if the solution is relevant to my situation.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Over the year that I've owned it, I've come to the conclusion that the previous owner did not take very good care of it. Of all the things wrong with it, she has always been a trooper and got me where I needed to go. 6 months until I graduate and have an income, just need her to hang on a little longer... Thanks in advance for any input. Please let me know if there are further questions.

sooooo... if/when we hook it up the the code scanner thingie will it throw a code for that??

Also, I read so much about cam positioner sensor. Would it be safe to say this is not an option to consider??

thank you for entertaining my curiosity.

Sure sounds like immobilizer. With fuel pump you may get one start but as soon as the standing fuel pressure drains that would be all she wrote.

Thanks for your input. Wouldn't the immobilizer give me the icon on the dash??

I would have thought so but I have seen a few VW's that didn't. Holding out until your friend with the scanner returns may be prudent.

So the codes the scanner provided are 2096 and 2098. Would the o2 sensor/s make the car behave this way??

Unlikely. Any immobilizer codes? Long shot but if you still have access to the scanner you could do a relearn on the ETA or other wise known as the throttle actuator. Also check for vacuum leaks.

Didn't see any other codes than those two. No immobilizer codes and the dash icon turns on at start up but then turns off. Yes, I still have access to the scanner, probably through the weekend. I'll relay your relearn and vacuum leak suggestions. Thanks again for your reply, I appreciate it.

Another item came to mind and if you mechanic has and I'm sure he does if he's a mechanic check fuel pressure and fuel pressure regulator for leaks. Could be just as simple as the fuel pressure regulator went south..

Awesome!! I'll have them check that as well. Thanks for your input. It was just towed to his shop. Hopefully it will be a not-too-hard fix.

thanks again for all your help! She's up and running again. Turned out to be the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator. it was pretty crusty so they replaced it and it started right up, running like a champ. They mentioned that all my hoses look like that so I can anticipate replacing them in the near future. THANK YOU!

I apologize if my earlier reply came across as snarky or sarcastic. That wasn't ever my intention. Reviewing the thread I realized that it certainly could have been taken differently than I meant it. So if you did take it in any negative fashion, I do apologize.

Clean start and 2-3 sec run time is very typical for immo.

What are the codes you get running VAGcom? If no VAGcom, get friend with VAGcom or post local. Not sure if/how you can 'lose' immo (unless swapping cluster, or somehow erasing the immo chip in the key fob). Try another key?

Glad that it wasn't the fuel pump. Mine crapped out 4 miles after after I filled the tank, and it was around 35*. That gas was cold. Lol.
