    Bolts from Menards m 10x50

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I found some M10x50 stainless steel bolts at Menards, can this be used in place of the Ribe sd 10x50 for the turbo to exhaust manifold connection? The Bolts aren't special some how are they?

You can use whatever you want but good luck getting those to stay in.

Metric grades are different, and the equivalent is, I believe, 10.9 in metric.

The bolt grade is less important than the bolts ability to withstand heat. I would personally run something like this.

Does that direct the exhaust gas? Lol What's that.

Interesting, I never even realized they had a different strength table.

Indeed. They are very different ratings, but equivalencies exists.

You put the bolts through the holes and curl the edges up to stop the bolt from retracting.

Something like this. That one is made by IE hence the stamped graphic

Ribe sd is black. Menards is silver. Neither indicates the grade. What's the torque spec?

Exhaust manifold to turbo inlet flange bolts loosen for three main reasons.

First, tuned engines can often produce exhaust temperatures that exceed the maximum temp rating of the bolt material and a consequent reduction of bolt strength, leading to stretching/loss of fastener tension preload of the bolt more or less during each high temp cycle.

The vibration from the engine transmitted to an unsupported turbo, or with inadequate support stiffness to control the bending moment at the turbo flange, overloads the bolts at maximum temp, and the vibration works the bolts loose. When one bolt gets loose, the others will loosen faster sequentially. Bolts that have relaxed/stretched, will loosen further quickly from vibration.

The wrong bolt material is applied to an assembly that overloads the bolts at the operating temperatures developed. Inadequate bolt tightening procedures often compound this problem.

The recurring fastener failures many BAT tuned setups experience is usually the result of one or more of the above issues occurring.

Bolt locks will not prevent the bolts from stretching when exposed to excessive heat during operation for the bolt material used.

Stainless steel generally has a very good strength profile at elevated operating temperatures, due to the nickel and chromium content. However, the different stainless alloys have different high temp strength capabilities.

Problems with fastener failure in high temp, highly loaded assemblies will usually be resolved by installing stainless steel or Inconel fasteners.

The torque spec is according to the general use torque value charts per tread pitch and diameter.
