Looking at a couple S6 avants..... Insight needed

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The past couple of weeks I've been searching the forums craigslist ect for a s6 in decent shape. they seems to come along every now and then. I was just wondering what the going price should be...... I know a lot factors into the price and if the timing belt has been changed that should raise the price or if it has a new or rebuilt tranny. I was looking at this one:

    http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/m...459842045.html

I love the color and as long as all the stuff listed have been addressed it seems like a good car but a little high especially at 145k and original tranny.

Then there is this one, the owner told me the timing belt was done at 90k and new tranny at 120k but won't send me more pics he just says come see it but I'm 2 hours away... I just want some more pics and info before I drive there.

    http://newjersey.craigslist.org/cto/5436581282.html

If anybody has some info on either of them or a lead on another s6 within a reasonable distance of Philadelphia it would be much appreciated. Thx

For comparison, I paid $11,000 for mine 2 years ago. That came complete with repair and maintenance history back to the original owner, and the previous owner had already performed all the major repairs; timing belt, water pump, oil cooler leak, new brakes, etc.

Prices vary wildly though. There was a 1 owner with up to date maintenance that popped up in Texas last week for $5800.

One of the prevailing theories about the transmission failures is Audi's BS 'lifetime' fluid. If there's documentation about the tranny being serviced at some point I would feel better about it.

Wether its worth the price will be up to you. Both are what I would consider to be average examples. I think my '03 was also an avg example (152k miles) and I picked it up for 5k but already knew I was going to spend another 5k or so on restoring/modding it. Just be prepared w/ extra cash for maintenance as these are 10+yr old cars. After working on my project I would consider this engine to be essentialy bullet proof as long as you take care of all the maintenance and could be a runner for 20+ yrs in the right hands. Parts are a little hard to come by even at the dealer (lots of special ordering and waiting) but if you like working on cars labor savings will help offset the parts prices. Trans issues are always on the back of my mind but it's also a great excuse to do the 6spd swap.

Test drive before you decide to pull the trigger. If you have access to a Vagcom scan the car as well. Mine had 2 codes when purchased headlight sensor level warning and HVAC actuator or something. Both meant mechanically the car was still in great shape and the test drive proved it.

It would be awesome to see another S6 land into an Audi fan's ownership and brought back to all her glory.

Hopefully that red one comes with the stock wheels I see in the back of one of the pics since the wheels currently on the car are the wrong offset.

Sorry but the red one is way overpriced. They are great cars, but they are nothing special. I would not pay more than 8-10k max one and it better be mint. There is one in texas with 115k miles for 7500, I considered it before buying my allroad. I just hate automatics and love boost.

This is my S6, negotiable. There's a build thread, and tons more info in the classifieds of it.
Depending on price, we could probably work something out for transportation.

Agree, it's a problem when prices start to encroach on the next generation unless they're collector condition (this means very low miles, no more than a couple/few thousand miles a year).

Thx for the quick reply guys! I've read most of your current builds/projects in the c5 forum here, I love reading about the work you guys r putting in.
@carmudgeon yes I think the red is great and pretty rare but if he can't come down on that price some I'm gonna have to pass... He is gonna send me interior pics tomorrow and also a list and mileage of when things were done.
@bpark love your build I was really pulling for you to get it tied together for your trip lol I wouldn't mind finding one in decent shape for $5-6k then putting another $5-6 into it. Also if there are no cel's on the dash could there still be codes?
@mithrill yeah the wheels look sunken in. I do like the look of the 9spoke but they'd have to be the correct offset. Are the oem wheels 17x8 et35? 1/2" wider than b5 s4 but a lower offset?
@kaane I'll have to look further out maybe. my sophomore and junior yr of college I drove to and from Lehigh valley pa- Tempe az for school twice in my 99 a6 2.8 w/o a hitch. So possibility of flying to and driving home is somewhat of an option but th last thing I would want is a breakdown hundreds of miles from home....
@stupidturtle I'll be in touch with you tomorrow..

can anyone tell if the car f/s in nj is Ming blue in color it's tough to tell? It does look clean inside but the picture quality is subpar?

This looks like a nice car and super rare color too. There is a post about it here on the forum. I found it the other day and the color is very interesting.

I also found prices all over the map when I searched for my S6. These seem to really hold a decent amount of value even with over 100k miles assuming it's in good condition. I ended up paying about $18k for mine (about a year ago) but it only had 47k miles on it, it was in perfect condition, came with brand new tires and brakes, and an extra set of wheels/tires.

The amulet S6 is VERY close to me. I could go take a look at it early next week if someone wants me to. I think it is a little spendy but it looks pretty nice. (I think Turtle's car is the best buy out there now.)

    Thank you!

If anyone wants any videos of it, I'd love to show what ever may be desired. Not perfect, but all of the big ticket items have been taken care of.

Those wheels are called Celebrations and were found, in different sizes and offsets, on the 2004 A6 2.7T S-line and the RS6. The A6 version are 17x7.5 et43 and designed for the smaller wheel arches of the narrowbody, the RS6 are 18x8.5 et30. The ones on that S6 are the A6 size but I s'pose you could use spacers to push them out a bit. 10mm spacers would give you an effective offset of et33 which would look a lot better visually on the S6.

i think im most likely limited to buying from within driving distance. so im limited to a few hours around philly. jbx... if you would be able to check out that amulet without wasting a huge amount of time that would be great.... the owner never got back to me today about the service record and interiors photos. viollio... that dolphin grey looks clean but the rear bumper looks like it has peeled paint and maybe paint missing on rear pass fender lip. the mom and pop shop said they also would call back with the service records but that mileage is kind of a scary. the ming blue in nj said he has papers but never looked through them and there is a sticker under the hood stating when the timing belt was done...i dont believe what anyone says unless its in paper, but who doesnt look through the service records before or even after you buy the car? turtle im gonna shoot you a pm tonight sorry been a busy day! *also watching your walk around video now*

If you are dead set on buying an s6, you need to be willing to hop on a plane for the right one.

Personally I wouldn't pay more than 10 grand for a car that has inevitable transmission issues. I bought my s6 with a blown motor and rs6 front end for $3300 (didn't care about motor since 2.7 swap), 4ringsturbo bought his for $1900 with high mileage so deals are out there to be had.

A 6 speed swap done the right way with your own labor will run you 3-5k depending on clutch/flywheel, a rebuilt auto will cost you $1500-5k with your own labor so you need to be prepared for the inevitable cash drop. Paying 13 grand for a car without a recent rebuilt transmission swap or rebuild would be insane, regardless of how gorgeous a red s6 is.

Fantastic cars, but the transmissions are their downfall. I'm probably in to mine 10-12 grand and I've driven it a total of 200 feet. lol

Hey guys one of the s6's I'm look at got an LKQ transmissions and it was installed at Eurotech motorsports in Frederick MD. The papers say "oem recycled • aftermarket by keystone". Anyone familiar with this unit and shop? Anything to worry about. It was installed 30k miles ago

I would stay way from any rebuilts, very few people know how to properly rebuild ZF transmission.

I say unless you find a car with an AUDI replacement trans or with a warranty on the replacement trans then nothing anyone can say will make the situation any better or worse. Used trans from a car with 300k is as likely to fail as a car with a random 'shop rebuild' or vice versa. You have NO idea what they do when they "rebuild" a transmission.
Unless they will guarantee the work or product they're saying is installed, the work order is meaningless because the parts are expensive and they WILL NOT replace a single thing that hasn't outright failed.
Rebuilt Transmission is utterly meaningless in these cars if they wont stand behind the work. If you like the car make an offer assuming nothing has been done to the transmission.

I'm interested but I'm also looking for one more regionally so it might take some time. I did just miss out on an amulet red one up at Kinney Audi in Rutland vt. 2 owner Kinney Audi bought and serviced 134k miles up to date on all maintenance. Saw it on carsforsale.com last night as newly listed not even pics yet. called this morning said they sold it on Saturday. $9495. Sales guys said they listed it Friday and someone from Charlotte nc called Saturday and bought it. He said it was super clean I wonder if someone from here bought it?

That dude must be super old. Technically all FI is called supercharging, then there are the two types of supercharging as they're known in this millennium: supercharging and turbocharging. No one calls turbocharging supercharging anymore though lol.
