    B7 RS4 spun bearing

I have an opportunity to buy a RS4 with a spun bearing. Car has a 108k but I would be able to pick it up for around 16k. Problem is finding a good short block seems to be quite rare and the rebuilding route can be quite expensive depending on how much damage. Oil pan is full of gold. Any insight guys or what the average motor goes for? I'd do all my own labor.

I was in that position several years back; i.e. needing a new long block. Long story short, Audi stopped making new blocks as of 2011. They now have reman'd blocks. I was able to source a new block from a distributor in CA but that was mere luck. Cost was around 10k for the part.

A local owner is going through this, apparently there is a shop in Germany for used motors on Ebay. I would look in to that, unless you are going for a brand new motor. This company seems like they service the engine before they ship it.

That's one pricey piece. Almost makes this venture not worth it by the time you buy gaskets and all the time involved. I've brought a few S4's back to life and this seems like the next step. They are a pretty amazing machine so I was surprised to find that this has happened quite a few times. I know audi runs very tight on the bearing clearance so I'm sure lack of mtc does not help.

    And have never been happier

16k is quite a bit in my opinion.. maybe at 10k it would be worth it. Not only is the engine hard to source for a good price, there is maintenance afterwards - gaskets/carbon cleaning/control arms/sticky clutch/..etc like you have already mentioned. Economy is doing good at this moment, gas prices are low, but I don't believe RS will hold value for much longer. 108k miles already reduces quite a few buyers. Mine has 133k and daily driven.

I am not a dealer, so what do I know about latest prices - inflated or not.
Switched to Tesla and have never been happier. No more shady mechanic bills and excuses - oil top off before an oil change is normal or dealing with outdated forums that have image size limitations. And no more dealing with vendors that do not provide horsepower numbers but sell you random things by labeling them as performance parts. No more dealing with the Audi dealership and having to buy custom Audi specific tools. Wow. I can't believe I lived through all of this. Money pit.

Alright, I had the pleasant misfortune of experiencing a spun rod bearing last spring. Quite a terrible ordeal. I ended up opting for a remanufactured long block from Audi of Canada. Ended up costing me 16k cdn.

This seems to be a rare instance according to my research. Unfortunately I didn't have access to the previous owners maintenance records but I do know for sure that the oil that was being used was Castrol. Now I can't say for sure what was the root cause of the bearing failure, but it's a good measure to keep on top of the maintenance of these engines. Since replacing the longblock I've switch to liquid molly top tech and opted to change the oil ever 5,000 kilometres. It's safe to say that I will be keeping this car for a long time to come.
