    AWM engine replace AMB

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
hello all. I recently picked up a 2003 a4 with a 5 speed manual. I have a 2003 passat parts car with a AWM I am going to swap into the a4. I have done some research and I know I have to modify it to fit the coolant flange, so I am prepared for that. I need to get a timing belt kit for it. I currently have some parts laying around. I have a tensioner for an AWM, the hydraulic roller for an AWM, and a contitech timing belt with the part number 058 109 119 c 317. Will this timing belt work? or do I need to order different timing belt?

you don't have to modify anything, just use the AMB coolant flange (and all other external accessories). The part # you listed for the timing belt shows as fitting 00-01 ATW/AWM only; I'd just buy the updated TB kit from Blauparts with the new spring-loaded (vs hydraulic) tensioner/roller setup.

I recently put an AWM head on to my AMB block much easier than transplanting the whole engine if your rotating assembly and block are good. I used the AMB timing components and coolant flange.

The timing was set wrong and a broken valve reaked some halvok on the piston. Kinda smashed the edge of the piston down so its rubbing on the cylinder wall. Just easier to swap engines.

so another question for you guys. I am in the middle of the swap right now and discovered this. Looks like one of the previous owners ended up in the ditch or something. Tore the one line up bad, and the other one is just dented up a little. Are these vent lines for the fuel tank? how important are they?

It appears to be the evap purge line. The car will run without it but you will get a CEL and the engine will run very rough whenever the N80 is activated.

The opening for the thermostat housing may have to be massaged a little bit with a dremel and a sanding drum so the electric thermostat housing will seat all the way. Aside from that, the blocks are pretty much identical. All the external cooling parts from the AMB should be swapped over...

hey guys. putting the timing belt kit together right now and I just noticed I have the older style tensioner roller. Like from an AEB or ATW. Can I still use it in this car?

Block cast is exactly the same. That is what matters, along with internals. But they are 100% compatible and may also be 100% the same. With the AWM outside of the block bare, just install it as you would an AMB replacement and use your AMB parts (all of them). Don't start swapping parts, even though some are or look the same. That is where your confusion will lie. Just swap block for block (absolutely no accessories or hardware) and you will be fine. Easiest way to go about it to avoid any confusion.

about the only 2 things I am using from the VW on the engine is the exhaust manifold, and the starter. I am also using the VW passat transmission as it has less miles on it. I did have to do the above shown mod for the coolant flange to fit right. doing the assimbly today hope to have the engine in later tonight. Right now I am off hunting down a tensioner roller and hydraulic tensioner.

so I have a bit of an issue now. I have the engine and trans all in ready to go, and the cv axle bolt pattern is different. What the heck? why would everything on the transmissions be the same and this is different? FYI, this car is a FWD not a quattro.

never mind. Found it in my vw bently service manual. calls for a puller tool, but I just used long bolts and pressed off the transmission housing. Thanks for the help! That took a load off of my back. Was not looking forward to having to pull it back out. They are both 012 transmissions.
