RS6 - crank, no start

Drove fine. Parked for dinner. Back: crank, no start.
Being towed here this morning.

Any tips/suggestions to for the first troubleshooting steps?

I plan to first hook up VAGcom, see what codes are stored.
Then clear codes.

IIRC, crank sensor ("engine speed sensor") can cause 'crank, no start'?
Quick test maybe:
In engine module, measuring block will bring up engine rpm. while cranking, observe if numbers (100 or so rpm?) are showing. Would that rule out the crank sensor?

Next, would check for spark.
Next, would check for fuel.

Other suggestions for 'crank no start'?
