Cylinder wall scoring lead to catastrophic failure?

I've been reading about cylinder wall scoring on here and my question is does it eventually lead to some catastrophic engine failure or is it more a permanent menace and annoyance? I read a lot about the people who actually replace the motors and I read a lot about the ones who dump it at carmax. What about those who simply keep going as is?

It's a 25quattro s4 and burning a qrt every 400 miles and previous owner 15,000 miles ago claims he burned qrt every 500. Car has 130k miles and had timing components replaced at 95k. Drives great other than the smoke and frequent fouled plugs and awful looking combustion chambers on a few cylinders.

They don't fail catastrophicly, but they will end up loosing compression, which is catastrophic in a way. Seems like people either ride it through or off load it. Depends on a number of factors unique to ones situation.

Here's to having a future V6 once a couple cylinders lose compression haha

My s4 is the same condition as yours. Burning 1qt of oil per 500 miles sounds insane but at the end of the day I'm not trying to drop 5k+ on a new motor. I learn to deal with it. I reset my trips to have an estimate of how low my oil is. Once oil light is on I simply just add 2 qt of oil. Easy but annoying. Sometimes it makes me feel like I bought a lemon audi but I still love my car. Get 2 people that had the same consumption rating. They just didn't care anymore

I can only add less than 1.5qt oil everytime the MIN light on, any reason for the difference? thanks

I was told by a very knowledgeable person rebuilding my heads for my 06 S4, that the exhaust valve guides are known for excessive wear, thus loosing oil. This could be your issue as opposed to scoring cylinders.

What is the best way to diagnose if it is exhaust valves?

I burn/consume/lose lots of oil... probably 1qt every 500 miles or so depending how I drive. The ass end of my car is constantly coated in some blackish spots, idk if its from the exhaust itself or any of the slow seeps off the bottom of the engine getting kicked up when im driving by the low pressure zone. I'm assuming exhaust though because I don't think I have a real "drip" or leak anywhere.

My S4 has been doing this for years.
I also set the trip odometer.
Same little burnt oil on back of car at times.
Runs great for past 10 years. Just have to add oil.
