2001 a6 wont start immobilizer light flashing

As the title states, I've had an a6 sitting for a long time now that won't start and the immobilized light is flashing. I'm going to buy a USB to obdii wire and diagnose with vcds lite but would like to make sure I am getting one that I will be able to retrieve the skc with vag tacho\vag commander as I am sure I will need it to fix whatever is wrong. I would greatly appreciate any advice thank you.

Won't work. You might get the SKC but you will not be able to fix the mismatched key without a licensed VagCom cable. Or at minimum a VCDS 'lite' license (if that will actually allow adaptation of the Immo)..
Just spend the money and get a KII-Usb or Hex Can interface from Ross Tech. Save yourself the hassle and delay you're going to inevitably suffer by buying a cheap thing with fake software.
though...to be honest, I think there are a few people who have got it to work. Odds are not in favor of that though.

For $hundy i'll rent you my Hex-Can cable and send with it EVERY thing you need to fix an Immo problem, adapt the keys, and whatever you want to your cluster and ECU. Problem is I don't know if I can live without it for a week..I wouldn't be able to sleep.

Thank you very much. Most of the searching that I've done on this situation has led me to the Ross tech website. I've got a few more questions. From what their site says, I will still need another way to retrieve the skc to do any immo adaptations. Is that correct? I would also like to diagnose with the free version of Ross tech before I shell out bigger money on anything else. Shouldn't that at least tell me what the problem is? I also came across a site that mentioned the wiring from the coil around the ignition being too short for the fullest extent of the telescoping steering. Has anyone heard of this problem? Thanks again!

Yes, you'll need software to extract the SKC. Here's one DIY that goes through the steps:
    https://sites.google.com/site/imnuts/
Vagcomander typically works to get the SKC from the ECU, and you use VCDS to adapt the Immo system to the key. You can run Vagcommander through a cheap blue KKL cable (get off ebay).
And sometimes you can even run VCDS on one of those, but lots of people have problems with that. I don't know; I bought a cable from Ross Tech 13 years ago when I got my first OBD2 VW. Best investment I ever made.

    Ok, thank you. Found this:

Is the software that comes with these what I need or is there another source I should be acquiring vag commander from? Is it capable of diagnosing what faults there may be? Do you know if it will work with the freeware version of vcds? Thanks again!

You can get the SKC code with the ebay cable.

Once you have the SKC, you will need a registered copy of VCDS to adapt the keys. You can register the lite copy for $100 and use to with the ebay cable.

So vcds lite when registered can do the key adaptations for sure? Also, the software that comes with the aforementioned wire will suffice?

The functionality will be enabled when you register. I can't say how well your cable will work. It should work though.

VCDS Lite can be downloaded for free from VCDS website. Unregistered it will read codes and do some basic things. To do adaptations and such you need to register.

I'm not sure what software the cable come with.

Does anyone know where to get a good copy of vag commander?

I know nothing is 100% but the Vag-commander / Vag Com procedure I linked above has worked for me on a dozen cars, not just mine, that I've tried it on. Hasn't failed to work on any C5 that I have tried. Rb4 clusters have a couple extra steps, and newer than that I'm still in the dark due to encryption + component protection.
AFAIK nobody has a way of avoiding the dealer for keys on any VAG car from about 2008/9 --> .

And if anyone needs a couple I just got a few Megamos RFID chips in the mail (virgin rfid chips for key fobs).
