    ECU swapping for tunes

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Did some reading around but didn't come across a definitive answer.
I'd like to purchase a different ecu so that I can have two different tunes. Car is an 00' 6 speed. Is switching the ecu as simple as plug and go (same p/n obviously) or would I need vagcom?

Just make sure both ECUs have the appropriate coding.

As mentioned above it's possible for the ECU to have tune switching. Motoza, who is one of the more popular tuners for the 1.8T, offers tune switching (I use it on my 1.8T for E85/87/91). It looks like they have it for the 2.7T; called MTC:

I was talking to Daz about this a few days ago for a 91/e85 tune.
He said it is an option to swap ECUs between fillups if needed.

Useful and easily found thanks but my question wasn't which ecus are compatible

I had read some where that this doesn't work for a boxes I also don't know much about working with ecus or tuning.. It seems more cost effective to just buy an ecu with a different tune for the time being

Once the Ecu is coded for your trans and cluster the ecus can be swapped with no prob. Just make sure after you swap an ecu turn the key on for 15-20 sec then cycle the key off and on to let the throttle body adapt.

So if I picked up an ecu I would need to get vagcom to code the cluster? The car wont run if I just swap em?

The car will run as long as the ecu is compatible. But if the coding is not right you may have faults for no communication to abs or cluster and in some cases your tach will not work for example if you have a 2000 with an Abox ecu and you install an mbox ecu.

No, you just need to be sure that you have the proper "box" (as you'll hear) for the car. For instance, mine is an M-box. I have 3 ECUs, each with a different tune on them. Obviously, you'll want to cycle the key and let the throttle body adapt. You will also want to turn on systems that each tune requires (activate methanol, etc.) if that's your thing.

Daz can recode most ecu's I believe aka as long as you have an ecu to send him he can go from there but I could be wrong. Also like someone said above daz now has switchable tunes which is awesome. So either get 2 ECU's with two different tunes on them which you can just swap easily or find a tuner who can switch on the fly
