Joey Mod (Clear corner/black paint housing) party in Portland 3/26 (Sat)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a friend in PDX that has a decent size garage and a heat gun if anyone here wants to do the Joey mod? I've done it on my previous car with an oven, but would like someone that has done them before to help us out if possible. I know a few RS4 owners wants to do them as well. Beer/Food/Cash?

    UPDATE
Who: All B7 owners are invited, if you have a different model, its up to you to do the research. Experienced people are all welcome as well!
When: March 26, 2016 (Sat), time TBD (will update once I know exact time)
Where: Portland, OR (Address will be given personally)
Why: To black out head lights, hang out, drink beer
What to bring: If you have extra jacks, we may need some extra depending on turnout. Also a big tent (for car shows/sporting events etc.) depending on the weather, we need to pull the bumpers in the drive way, only one car will fit in the garage.

Payment: 12 pack of beer per person to use all the tools/garage time, split $100 among all of us for technician assistant for minimum of 2 hours. If you need the clear corner lens/chrome bulbs, you will need to bring cash or a check to me (Kohei Takazawa) after I front the money for the group order from Phil.

If you have any questions regarding the party, PM me or post on the this thread. Thank you.

I would be interested in clear corner. Have done it before. But I have used a heatgun a few times to change mk4 golf lenses

I'd be down. Nick's car blog recommends a few other mods as well when you have the bumper off:

    http://nickscarblog.com/diy/b7-audi-clear-corner-mod

I'll probably do the sidemarkers also. No bumper removal necessary but it does make it a lot easier.

I'd be down as well. I clear cornered my old C5 but did it the sketchy way and didn't actually open the assembly lol. It'd be great to meet some local RS4 guys as well!

awesome, I do have another guy with a heat gun so I am thinking a assembly line sort of method!

2 guys on removing the bumpers of the cars/getting headlights out
1 guy on heat gun, getting the head lights nice and warm and/or use the oven at my friends house as well (only one head light usually fits in the oven)
1 guy on prying it open
1 guy on disassembling the head lights to remove parts to be painted/spray painting in a paint section

This will be ideal when the weather is nice since some of the cars will need to be on the driveway as the bumpers are coming off. With this assembly line type work, we should have all of our headlights done in a reasonable time. I am doing the clear corner as well while we do this.

His shop has a urinal/beer fridge/music etc. He asks that the people coming will bring a minimum of a 6 pack (I usually bring a 12 pack since I'll drink like 3 while I'm there) and he likes micro brews. Mexican beer is ok too.

Also there are helping hands, experienced in car work that will work for $20's and $40's (High school kids). One kid lives at the house since they are working on his house as well, the house is 95% completed.

Now we need to set a date, and reserve his garage space, as well as keeping an eye out on the weather.

Just contacted Phil for the clear corners. They are $70/pair for the lenses and $30 for the chrome bulbs (this is for the RS4). You might want to contact him with specifics to your model. Fly300kts is his user name.

It's not required right? You just pop off the amber housing and off you go... Not strictly legal but not hurting anybody either.

No its not necessary. We have a local guy that just popped it off, I think it still looks clean. I may go that route if putting back the clear lenses are a pain. It doesn't look out of place at all with out the lens, if people didn't know, it looks OEM.

I will be going to his house today for my HID fog install round 2.. (bad ballast on the first batch, very common issue), and will get some dates for us! Instead of asking everyone what dates work, I'm going to list all the dates possible for this, and if you can't make it, unfortunately there won't be a date that will work for everyone. I will use the date with the most votes.

Cool, thanks for setting it up. Where do you get the clear lenses? The chrome bulb does light up in amber right (making it legal)?

I only know of Phil, he sells them for $70 a pair, $30 for the chrome bulbs (lights up amber). The chrome is to hide the orange coloring on the bulb, which would defeat the purpose if you put a amber bulb in there..

I couldn't go over to my friends house today but I will post dates once I find out.

    Cool, thanks for the info.

I probably won't do the lenses or the bulbs myself. I'll probably spray paint my side markers while I have the bumper off.

What kind of paint should we plan on using for painting the inside of the housing? I should probably go out and buy some soonish. Anything specific that people use for this mod?

    I used a matte/satin black rattlecan

As for the bulbs, you can go the cheap DIY route and just dust some amber bulbs with chrome paint. The amber light will still shine through when on but when off will reflect silver

I'm getting matte black, and reflective metallic black for light housings. I'm going black in the housing around the bulbs. The metallic black reflects quite well, did this for my bra and worked quite well.

You can get the chrome bulbs on eBay and possibly Amazon for far less than $30.

I didn't do the joey mod on my wife's old B7. But I did take out the amber corner, did a clear lens swap to the projector and painted the stock bulb silver.

Here's a DIY. Towards the bottom it has a link for the bulbs.

One suggestion, would be to take the housing apart instead of breaking the amber lens.

So talked to the house owner, here is some info:
Is the heat gun really sufficient enough to get the headlights adhesive separated? We need proof that the heat gun will work over the oven method. Or else the Seattle guys will have a waste of a drive.
His oven is not working right now, so I am going to source a cheap ass electric oven on Craigslist, to expedite things (using heat gun and oven).
If we want the highschool kid to help out taking bumpers off etc for 2 hours of his time, we all need to pitch in $100, split amongs us (if 5 people, then $25 each). He is skilled in car installs/work.
Each person will need to bring a 12 pack of micro brews to use the tools/garage. We can drink our own beers however.
We will take no responsibility if something goes wrong, and this is all at your own risk.

I have a friend with another heat gun so we will have 2 guns/electric ovens. He has 2 jacks, one set of jack stands. If any of you have extra jacks, that will most likely be helpful. All other necessary tools are available.

The Dates I am thinking about are:
    March 26th or 27th
    April 2nd or 3rd

Please let me know your preference, and if anyone knows more info about the heat gun method, that will be helpful.

My preference is March 26th/27th as I will probably be out of town April 3rd. However i will still be available April 2nd. I also have a jack i can bring if we need it. I think using the heat gun is our safest option because it directs heat only to the adhesive rather than the entire housing. Just my two cents but i think thats the best way to do it.

thanks for the reply guys, my friend was concerned if it was going to work or not since the most common way is to use the oven to evenly distribute the heat on the adhesive. I did this on my last car, and it was still a bitch to pry it open after baking it. I hope the heat gun will work like this DIY (thanks btw, we can have this DIY handy on a tablet).

Looks like March 26/27th is getting most votes so far. I will let this post run a few more days, then make a reservation for the garage time. If we get enough heat guns (and not blow a fuse lol), I may not need to source a shit oven on CL.

Looks like March 26/27th is getting most votes so far. I will let this post run a few more days, then make a reservation for the garage time. If we get enough heat guns (and not blow a fuse lol), I may not need to source a shit oven on CL.
A heat gun works just fine. We've done quite a few of these clear corners in Pat's garage with just a heat gun.

arch 26/27 is best for me, the weekend after is my bday.

I'd be down for the group buy since they are a bit pricey

Down for the groupbuy also for a good price. If it's just clear lenses then I don't see the complete necessity in them... more of a nice to have.

The kids from Seattle will probably meet somewhere south, like Federal Way, and carpool down?

The group buy will be a set of the chrome bulb/CC lens. I have 3 people in my group for sure, let me know if you want in on the lens/bulb set. This is all coming from Phil. I am going to order soon so earlier the better if you let me know!

I marked the calendar for March 26th, Sat for the baking party. Mar 27th is Easter, so I wanted to avoid people that were spending time with their family for the holiday.

    OP update as well

    Freaking sweet!!

I've got a bachelor party that night at one of your infamous strip clubs. This will work out great!

Could you let me know how much Phil is charging for the lenses/bulbs? I already got my bulbs, but if the price is reasonable, I'd probably go for them to sweeten the groupbuy.

    Thanks!

Phil charges $70 for the pair of lenses, $30 for the chrome bulbs. With the group buy, he has told me he will discount way more. I don't want to publicly say his discount since I'm trying to sweet talk him lol.
