I would have expected that damage to easily cost double. What type of labor and paint guarantee does this shop offer?

The last shop I had the Evo at must have had some bad paint, because I'm starting to see bubbling after 2 years. They have a lifetime guarantee on their labor and paint though, so it's just a matter of scheduling for them to respray it.

That's always a good idea. One thing that I love about insurance is the ability to get their lawyers on whoever you need to, to ensure vehicles are repaired appropriately. A lot of people don't realize that full coverage insurance usually gives you access to the insurance company's lawyers. I had to take full advantage of that about 9 years ago. A shop was giving me the run-around, and their ability to repair the vehicle appropriately and in a timely fashion was well in question. After getting the lawyers from State Farm involved, my car was finally repaired correctly.

The repairs were far from being done right the first time around. The shop was refusing to do anything about their crappy work, and I was refusing to sign off on the work and take delivery of the vehicle. Long story short, we were originally told 3 weeks for repair, and the shop had the car for over 100 days in total. The only reason the repairs were ever completed is because of the lawsuit hanging over their heads by State Farm. The car had to be repainted 7 different times over a 1 year period. The initial 'repair' was 78 days IIRC, and the extra days were due to the shop having to repaint the vehicle.

That shop is now out of business, thankfully.

    Here was the original damage:

Repairs totaled over $14,000. The initial repairs were just over $8k, which was paid by the insurance of the lady that hit us. The extra repair costs had to be paid by the body shop, because it was their crappy work that forced them to have to repair the car multiple time and repaint the car multiple times.

The latest paint issue we have on the car is caused by a different shop, but that shop does stand behind their work and I don't have to involve State Farm's lawyers to get it fixed.

just so you know.. black is a BITCH. I have swirl marks down the whole passenger side now when the sun is shining. Thinking I need to go get a paint correction and some ceramic coating to fix it completely. If they dont do a good job... you WILL know.

I'd be very weary of a fix at that price, especially in a major metro area. Choosing based on lowest price is not wise. Definitely get other estimates.

positive online reviews don't mean the shop does good work because 95% of the general population can't tell a good job from a crap job as long as the car looks put back together. i had similar damage on my first s5 that cost over $10k to fix. there's no way $1.5k is going to cover damage of that scale involving cutting, welding, filling, priming, painting, clear-coating, blending the fender, roof, trunk, bumpers..

dealing with crap work is much more of a headache then finding a shop to do the work properly the first time. an estimate like that would have me running away and not looking back. there's no need to go to a shop recommended by your insurance company. your insurance company's goal is to cut you the smallest check possible. how is going to their shop going to work in your best interest?

If you have to put a $500 deductible, I would too avoid doing through insurance because of carfax. However, for my Honda that I just sold, it shows up as "Minor Accident" because the insurance paid me out $1500. So it was $0 out of pocket for me. Not so detrimental when selling a Honda, but can't speak for an Audi. Do your research.

You have the right to use whatever shop you please. Insurance co is more interested in cost than quality. Go get other estimates. Find the best shops in your area.

if they did a shitty job the first time, what makes u think they will get it right the second?

+1 to everyone else though. bring it to a reputable shop that u know does good work. if you are 100% confident this shop is good, then by all means.

but I would post in the regional section to see where other enthusiast does their work in the DC area.

$1500 is way too cheap for that kind of work. I would expect to pay probably 2x that at least for quality work.
