    Tail Light - Loose.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Replaced my reverse bulbs w/ LED's a while back and while washing the car, I noticed the tail lights sit a bit loose.

Went back in, removed, aligned, and secured them down. Still a bit loose. Suggestions on what could be the cause? Do I need new mounting hardware?

Car hasn't been involved in any accidents, etc.

I had that issue too, just really push it all the way in again and screw that square screw really tight. I used the dirt streaks on my car and the taillight to match up (bootleg, I know, but it worked).

I have the same issue. I could not figure out how to get it to sit as tightly as it did originally. As far as I can tell everything is tightened down.

    Thanks for the replies.

I don't want to tighten it too much as this housing is plastic. All I need is having to purchase a replacement, haha.

There is a guide where the tail pushes into. Wondering if I have to replace those?

It's #2 in the diagram below:

^ Yep, I remember the little rubber plunger looking piece (Item#2) sticking out the back and needing to be pressed back into its socket, but no matter how hard I pressed on it (again being a little careful so as to not crack the lens under pressure), I could not get it to seat as securely as originally installed.

    Just ordered parts #2 & #3.

Going to attack this over the weekend. My OCD kicked in once I noticed how it wasn't securely in place.

My rear right tail light does this. It wiggles up and down a little bit, but not much in and out.

That's EXACTLY how mine is. I'm hoping these rubber grommets fix the issue. Friend with a 2016 did the same thing and his tails are in securely.

Are both of your taillights loose or just one? In any case I'm looking forward to hearing your results. What I'm really curious about is a comparison between the original Item#2 and the replacement, as far as whether you can see some deformation on the original piece as a possible cause for why it did not allow a tight fit at reinstallation. Maybe those are a one-time use item?

I took mine out and I made sure it was fully seated. However, it appears there is a clip somewhere on the bottom that helps space it against the bumper to prevent up and down wiggle. That spacer/tab is missing though, and I have no idea where it went. The tail lights/bumper have never been removed to the best of my knowledge.

Have a pic of the clip you're referring to? Trying to find a picture of underneath the tail light.

So after careful examination, I noticed the tail lights have a rubber bumper that's adhered to the inner portion.

Unfortunately, Audi doesn't sell this rubber piece separately. This is where you gotta improvise. I took #2 on the diagram above and trimmed what was needed. Took double-sided tape put a small piece where the rubber bumper would sit and then re-installed.

Tail light is now sitting solid (thank god).
