    Shipping your car?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello all,

I will have to move over the summertime cross-country (literally, NJ to CA). I'm not a huge fan of putting nearly 3,000 miles on my S4 while I can drive the wife's car (and together, and not separate cars) in order to get there.

Has anyone shipped their car somewhere? If so, any reputable companies that you trust handing the keys over to? I have no idea of cost, but I imagine it's at least a couple thousand dollars.

    Thanks.

I shipped before CA <--> NJ. Will cost you around $1,200 open container. About $700 more for closed container. I don't remember the name but they are dime a dozen.

Wait....why are you leaving the armpit of the USA to go to quake state?!

I shipped my porsche from wa to ca when I moved last year. Picked the most reputable company I could find, Reliable Carriers. They are super expensive, but you are nearly guaranteed no issues, no third party drivers, as little car shuffling as possible (mine was never moved), and super quick. These are the same guys that are used for monterey historics, barret jackson, etc.

I'm not affiliated in any way, just a happy customer (http://www.reliablecarriers.com/)

Reliable seems to be the best, and they are expensive. I haven't used them but everything I have heard has been good. Expect to pay about $2000 though.

Cost me 800 to ship from PA to AZ. Make sure the company has a COI for covering any damages.

Shipped mine from CA to Michigan for roughly 850$ when I bought it using https://www.uship.com/ . You tell them what you're shipping and where from and then different people bid for your service.

What about putting it into a Sea Container and put it on a Train? Anyone ever done that. That could be a way but its probably going to take awhile

I helped with logistics fora few dealers for a while. We would refer individuals uship.com or montway.com a lot. We used centraldispatch.com but it's not as easy to use or "free" like the aforementioned routes. The public sites usually just charge up some for doing the leg work of finding an open spot on a truck headed that way. Give them some leeway on timeframe, it's a long run and it can be interested running a truck across the weather systems this time of year.

Used reliable carriers once and was beyond satisfied. If I need to ship a car again, I wouldn't use anyone else. Shipping in a closed container can be expensive but worth it, imho, because you never know what the weather will be like.

I would tape the front and drive it. Would be a lot of fun IMO. I like to drive, I do 25-30K a year so 3,000 is not much to me.

for the love of god DO NOT contact a broker.... i swear i got 50+ emails and texts within a week, then residual follow-ups for like 3 months later

i occasionally work with customers int he transportation industry and Reliable has the best reputation. there are a TON of guys out there trying to start out or happen to have a 2-5 car hauler and a duelie truck that are willing to do smaller jobs for cheap. i found a guy that shipped my car from IL to NH for like $600 in an enclosed trailer, but when I needed to ship another car, it was impossible to find anything less than $1200

i bet you can find someone local or get a referral from someone if you ask around. try the regional section of AZ maybe? good luck

Congrats on the move. I wish something would force me to move from east to west coast but sadly it looks like I'm out east for the long haul.
IMO, if you care about your car (and you're on Audizine so you probably do), spend the extra money to make sure it gets there without incident. That's a long trip, so why take the risk. Spend the extra money on a reputable carrier and just don't go out to a few nice dinners to make up the difference.

Since youre going to be driving a car down there anyway just take the S4 and have a roadtrip of a lifetime (possibly?). I dont know how much time you have but i would take at least a week (2 would be better) and just enjoy the hell out of all the things you can visit on your way and all the nice roads and twisties. Its a damn car, not an investment, ENJOY IT!!.

Also, whatever you will spend on shipping cost, thats how much you would probably lose in value for added miles / maintenance. Just tape the front off to avoid the rock chips.

Are you only driving your other car? Are you not driving a truck and having everything shipped instead?

If you're driving a truck at all, it would probably be better to just hook up a carrier for the car and trail it behind the truck.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm leaning towards shipping and using my wife's car to travel together and so the road trip that way. Everything will be shipped via a moving company, so no trailer option.

I used these guys years ago when moving from Utah to the DC area. http://www.dasautoshippers.com/ They had a lot of options from open to enclosed. I did it open since the vehicles were nothing special. They also had the option of door to door and from one of their hubs to hubs, where you dropped the car off somewhere locally. Their door to door, was a rollback that picked the vehicle up at your door and took it to their hub for loading on the carrier.

Everything worked out just fine for me, cost me about $800 per car.

Echo what everyone else said: stay away from brokers. I've tried them twice; first time was just a day delayed, but the second time, they were outright lying to me about issues. "Driver fell out of truck, finding a new driver"..."driver got pulled over and went to jail"...
For cross country moves, they may hand your car off 3-4 times. Pay a little more for a place that will do it from start to finish.

+1 on all of the above. If you use an open transport, be prepared for caked on grim and grit when delivered and probably some new scratches as well. Be careful trusting someone else moving your vehicle for cheap.

I agree with some of the others.. Tape that bad boy up and go on the road trip of your life! Fuel is cheap and food and hotel will be WAYYYYYYYYYYYY less than shipping the car...

My front spoiler was damaged because it rubbed on the trailer door the whole trip. If you search my posts (around April 2014) I put the name of the actual guy that owned the company that shipped it... complete ass to work with. (I searched my email and could not find the name)

There is a structure in the industry where you work with a dispatcher (who gets the business) who hires a company who hires a driver. Make sure you know all parties in the chain.

In addition, I paid for a direct route, and the driver went all over the place before getting the car to me. He would not call me while the car was en route, and was evasive when I could get him to answer. In the end, the car was several days late.

    Shipping you car?

    Figured I'd give an update.

I set up a shipment with Reliable Carriers (covered trailer). From New Jersey to New Mexico took about 2.5 weeks, but it would have been less if I was already there, haha.

I received the car today, no issues and everything went smoothly. The drivers for both pick up and delivery were very courteous and professional. Calling the dispatch center in Michigan when in transit was easy and customer service was excellent.

Highly recommended if you're looking for a company to ship your car.

shipping is a great option! I put 3k on my car when I first bought it, driving down to key west, florida from nashville and back which was absolutely awesome but i do sometimes wish i had that 3k off the odometer.

Would love to, but we could travel farther in one day by driving one car (switch drivers). Plus the wife doesn't drive manual.

Plus we ended up driving 4,000 miles...

Better late than never...but the cost was about $1700 with Reliable. Super great, professional service. The car was covered the entire trip and was in good hands! Highly recommend and will use them again, if needed.

Thats not as bad as I thought. I had mine done on an open carrier for about $800 door to door from Utah to MD. Wasnt a big deal for the vehicle I was shipping but if it were something like the S4 under $2k for Reliable would be worth the money. Thanks.
