    HPFP Stud Kit

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
For those who have purchased the hpfp stud kit, is it possible to measure the length of the stud? I am led to believe that this is a 80mm double sided stud with thread m6x1, 27mm thread on each side. Really dont feel like ordering online.

    Shopping List:

    NUTS - pack of 5
STUDS - pack of 1 (more durable), or STUDS - pack of 5

I was wondering exactly the same thing . LOl I just logged on to ask the same question. I was gonna take one of the existing bolts with me to my hardware supplier to make sure I get the correct thread pitch, but did not have the overall length. Too long and it would be very awkward to get on ..

I actually counted the threads on one of the kit pictures and since m6x1 each thread is 1mm. It actually turned out to be 27 threads. So im thinking 99% this is a 27mm threaded on both sides with 80mm overall length. Its a fairly common fastener.

edit, OK so i believe I have the correct stud there. Since the HPFP bolt is a m6x60, and you cross reference this picture

It looks like the stud is sticking out an additional 2cm past the HPFP.

That's some good sleuth work I was looking at the same thing. I don't know how far the stud goes into the aluminum and if it bottoms out.
I'm sure eventually someone will chime in with an exact measurement. If not I can always take the bolt off , measure the depth to bottom it out add the thickness of the pump and then 20 mm. I think you are right though 80mm is about right . but not a big deal to grind off a piece if its too long. I usually spin a nut on first , grind off a piece then spin the nut off to repair any thread damage, then put that end in the housing with Loctite . Proper length up front is always preferable though.

The stud bottoms out. Put no preload on it but install it with some loctite. Some people have used blue, some red. I'll probably use red. The oem bolt length is 60mm 100% I'd honestly prefer to go to the hardware store pay $10-15. Don't know why aftermarket retailers are selling these kits; if they were some custom studs fitted exactly for the length of the HPFP i would understand. Also, there doesn't seem to be any reported issues in taking off the hpfp with these longer studs.

agreed , exactly my thinking , easy enough to go buy 3 studs and 3 nuts , I was gonna use blue , but if they back out use red . I think the nuts are only 7ft/lbs or so so Blue should be fine. I think I'll do it April/May time frame as its too cold right now so lots of time to get what I need .
Understandably the kit provider is reluctant to provide stud dimensions but I don't see the big deal really.

Get these nuts, or just go to your local hardware store.

    http://www.mcmaster.com/#94235a080/=118laf7

comes in a pack of 5. The goal is to get as cheap as possible; you could even use a fully threaded rod instead of a double sided stud.

I was told by a tech that we should change our hpfp bolts everytime we replace our cf. If there is any truth to that it makes the stud kit make even more sense.

Probably just going to tack them on to a work order so I would prefer the rust resistance (that .0005" plating wont last too long on the bottom side). For a personal order I would get the Cadmium-Plated.

yeah those Carr ones are the ones I was looking at too . Surprisingly difficult to get where I live actually. Hopefully I can get some shipped to Canada without the use of UPS brokerage thieves.
if I find they are too long so I cant get a socket on im cutting them a bit shorter. we will see.

nothing like a mod for a mod.

The way things typically go for me I will be so excited about this mod I will get it all done and forget to put the new cam follower on

Then you shouldn't do it :) plenty of comments out there saying its a bitch to get up over the long bolts and you cant fit a socket over.

If you have the softline hose, its pretty easy to just extend it with a longer piece from a hardware store, and deep sockets for the bolts. Shouldn't be any issues after that.

well Carr would not ship to Canada so i'm getting a threaded rod 1 meter long for 8 bucks . A4 SS. The advantage of this is I can measure up and get the exact length so i'm not going way past the nut. Just have to be a little careful lifting the pump of so you don't " shave" the aluminum bore for the holes with the steel rod while removing pump . I think it will be fine though . Then I can cut it just above the nut by about 3 or 4 threads and have it look neat. I should have enough steel rod left over for a couple more cars lol.

I have a buddy with an A4 so I think I know where the rest of the rod will be going.

I have the banjo bolt and it's quite easy to get the pump off over the studs. You can also fit a deep 10mm ¼" drive socket on the nuts. It's tight on the bottom one closest to the firewall, but it's doable.

I was worried about the bottom one closest to the firewall but if you say it works

While the studs may seem like a good idea, i was not able to fit the pump on even with the studs as short as possible. Tried it today with no luck.

I was waiting for you to post pic how to put the pump in with the studs. I guess you're like me I put 3 studs in but couldn't get the pump in also the coolant hard pipe is in the way. Try to unscrew the hard pipe screws see if you got more room. I'm going to attempt again when weather is warmer. I also ask aluthman how he put his in and he say the pipe didn't bother him

True, but the coolant hard pipe has never given me any issue. I'll snap some pics in a few days when I disassemble everything to swap in my new engine.

I too have banjo bolt. Just that pipe in the way. Maybe loosen the screws on hard pipe to move it around? Post some pic when you assembled your motor.

I'm sure getting the hard pipe to move a bit would definitely help. For me it was the hose barbed fitting that was in the way. Other than that I'm fairly sure I would have been able to fit it in.

Yes, you have to remove the two screws that hold the hard pipe to the manifold. Then move the coolant pipe towards the coolant expansion tank. I guess I just assumed every one did this already. I did it every time I removed the hpfp, even before I installed the stud kit.

Well actually I didn't move the hard pipe to get hpfp out. I was going to unscrew the hard when I'm going to install the IE pump. Just want to confirm you unscrew hard pipe. So now just wait till its warmer to do it.

on a related note anyone want to post any pics of special tools they have fabbed or use for that banjo bolt ? I haven't done this job yet but sounds like it will be a semi regular thing to check so fabbbing a tool may be useful.

im not even sure of the size , is it a 4mm triple square ?

8mm triple square attached to 2 long 3/8" drive extensions. Guide it up from down by the axle on to the bolt. I did take a 17mm wrench and cut it to about 1.5" or so to use on the union on the HP side of the pump.

I did something similar for the other fitting on the hpfp. Cut a 17mm wrench to half length which allows more room to tighten/loosen the nut.
