8,925 Miles and guess who needs 4 tires :D

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Soooo Iwent to get the tires rotated and balanced on Saturday and got turned away suggesting I would need tires in about a thousand miles. Went out looked at the tires and sure enough they are about to be on the wear bars, all four tires are pretty even with no alignment wear. Is this common for the stock Continentals? No I have not done any track days either.

Also I see a lot of you guys (searching and random posts that have popped up) rocking the Michelin Pilot Super sports [i think]. I have always enjoyed Toyo Tires, anyone got an opinion against those?

YES! I assume u have 19s summer Contis right? I changed mine at 14k and really should have done so many miles earlier. Paid $1000 for PSS. Arguing with dealer, Audi or continental was useless ... For me at least.
Should find more info around here too

Unfortunately, that is about the normal wear for these tires (mine were finished in about 11k) which sucks.

I haven't heard anything negative about the Super Sports if you get mainly warm weather in your area. A quick search around the forums should prove helpful for general reviews.

I wanted to pick up a set of PSS for my car, but chickened out and switched to the A/S3's due to the longer tread life, lol.

Seems pretty common for those tires. My car came with Pirelli summers (18" wheels); I pulled them off at almost 8k miles to swap out winters and don't think I will get more than 16k out of them, which seems OK.

I will be replacing them with PSSs.

yep, down to the wear bars on 2 and steel belt in the center of 1 after 12k. really sad to see them go so fast. have winters on now, but will be going to PSS once it warms up.

I had mine last to about 15k miles, but I do mostly straight line driving. I went with all seasons for my current area but will probably go back to summer tires as I am moving to FL shortly.

Mine lasted 7200 miles (replaced at 4/32nd).

Just had a state inspection after 4000 miles on the PSS'. I'd only lost 1/32nd on the front and the rears are still on the full 10/32nd. Worth it!

It's well documented on this forum that the stock Contis are garbage. I changed mine out at 12K miles, but they were noisy at about 8K miles.

I'm running Michelin Pilot Super Sports now and they are better in every way.

Yea unfortunately these factory summer tires are absolutely shitty. they grip quite well but you can see them wear down as you drive for one day. Hopefully they change the summer tires to something better. But im sure that these were the cheapest option for them when they built the car. Im at 11K and im at 3-4/32 im getting close

Is it pretty common for tires in general to not last that long on the B8's? My 12 STI ate through tires also even with regular rotations.

I went the AS/3 route hoping for longer tread wear as well, I have about 17k on them, down to 3/32-4/32 on all four of them. They are much better than the Contis but if I had known they wouldn't make it past 20k I would have looked harder for the Super Sports.

Keep an eye on your tires, tread and pressure... same as oil levels and other fluids. You should know what condition your tires are in before a shop tells you... Just a word of advice
I'm in need of new summer tires too - I'm going with PSS this time round... expensive but well worth it.

i do on a regular bases but never had a car burn through tires in 9k miles other than on my gti when I tracked it. Now I know this car likes to eat tires the same mistake won't be made again.

My Contis were done by 14K miles. Switched to Bridgestone Potenzas and love 'em. Hope they last a bit longer...

yeah my stock continental tires lasted about 10k . . . I'd love to get something different other than michelin pss simply because everyone seems to have those tires.. i'd be interested in hearing some other good alternatives to the pss just for the sake of having some alternatives to the pss.

For as crappy as these tires are, you would at least expect to get longer treadlife out of them. Unfortunately, it seems that they don't have any redeeming qualities. And they're expensive, too!!

Those of you that have changed to Pilot Super Sports:

Is the tire noise reduced? I know I'm not going to get a lot of miles out of the stock Continentals and the PSS seems to be the way to go.

Has anyone tried going to an H rated tire for longer treadlife?

    Thanks!

Yes, tire noise is definitely reduced... but I had stock Dunlops. So I don't know how the Contis are in comparison. Although the PSS's get relatively long tread life (compared to other "summer" tires), they still don't last as long as some of the better all-seasons. My first set lasted 30K (right at the warranty mark). I'm 12K on my second set, but this set still looks almost new. *shrug*

Why go to an H-rated tire for an S4? Seems like it wouldn't be enough tire - also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that if you don't have the minimum factory speed rating on the car, you could have insurance issues in the event of an accident.

Max Performance for the summer (whether it be the preferred summer-only, or a good set of all-seasons) and a dedicated winter tire (if you get the summers) is the way to go!

Correct and any tire shop worth their salt won't sell/install a tire speed rated lower than rated from factory as it would open them up for lawsuits as well.

I'm in need of 255/30-20 and I think those are running 320 a pop!... I'm waiting for their $70 gift card deal to order which they run every few months or so... Not that $70 makes a big difference but since I don't need the tires until the spring I might as well wait for that deal again...

I, like a few others here went with A/S 3's thinking the higher tread wear warranty would be a worthy trade off. After wearing them out in 20k miles though, I know now they are not. Thankfully Michelin is great about their warranty and I got over a 50% discount on PSS's, which are worthy of their great reviews. Car feels better and more planted, smoother and quieter as well. No issues in the rain, and I never deal with snow although The A/S 3's didn't rate well in that dept either. I'm on track to wear these at about the same rate, but that's fine since the warranty will continue to effectively reduce their cost, making them an even better value.

Threads like this make me realize there is not point in rotating the stock conti's. If Im only going to get ~12k miles on them, I might as well keep them quiet.

Max Performance for the summer (whether it be the preferred summer-only, or a good set of all-seasons) and a dedicated winter tire (if you get the summers) is the way to go!
You are wrong. The insurance company is there to cover you for an accident. They are not going to get into it with you over the speed rating of a tire. Same as they're not going to get into it with you if your tires are worn, even if that could have been a contributing cause of an accident.

And to answer your question: Why go with an H-rated tire? 1) They're much quieter. 2) They'll last a lot longer. 3) I don't need a Z-rated tire to drive to and from work. 4) They're usually less expensive than the Z-rated model in the same size.

Nonsense. The car isn't rated for the tire. That's not how it works. The tire is rated for the car AND how/where it's being driven.

Yes the tire is rated for the car but you are incorrect. I turned wrenches for years through college. No shop should install a tire with a speed rating lower than rated for from factory. Thus is why a vw gti has an h rated tire and limited to 132 to not exceed tire rating.

If you someone put an S or T rated tire and you went out and got into an accident and it was deemed tires were at fault, depending the outcome, you and the shop could be held liable for defective/incorrect equipment no different than if you had an accident due to bald tires.

Same situation applies if you put a load rated tire that is less than what the vehicle is rated too example a P tire instead of lt with load range above sea with load range above C or D

Replaced my stock Conti's last month before 12,000 miles on the odo. They were down to wear bars. Glad to be rid of those noisy tires! I went with the S-04's instead and loving them so far, except for slight rubbing on rear right. Size is same as stock, but the tread patch of the Bridgestones are significantly wider than the Conti's even though same size. Love the more flush/square look!

My neighbor just rolled his car in snowy weather getting onto an off ramp. Single vehicle accident, got a ticket for not enough tread on his snow tires
