Requesting Guidance in Changing Struts on an Audi A6 C5 3.0L

Well, it turns, I'm going to have to change the struts on my Audi. As I go over bumps, I hear a spring-like sound (rebounding) and its drawing concern. I'm ready to try changing the struts myself by using the proper tools. Would greatly appreciate some feedback on your experience. Thanks, and I'm looking forward to my next DIY-task.

Unless you have a reliable spring compressor kit, just take it to the shop. Other than that, it isnt too hard of a job. Dont need any special tools either. Shop ran me 80 bucks for my rears a few weeks ago so i imagine a decent shop should charge 200-220 for entire car.

Thanks, I found a decent spring compressor kit at Sears for around $50 (Craftsman Made in Taiwan). Not sure if this is recommended though. Which shop did you take your's to?

W&G Auto on grand ave in maspeth, ny. Its in queens. have been taking my cars there since 2011 and i know the guys well. Have referred a few forum members so far, all were happy with his service and pricing. If you have a shop that is close by locally, go see what they charge and if their work is good.

FYI most auto supply chain stores allow you to rent a spring compressor for cheap or next to nothing but a deposit. The only tricky thing will be the strut nut. Make sure you have the proper tool that allows an allen key to be wrench'd while strut nut is also being turned.

i have done mine several times and the spring compressor always scares the crap out of me . Getting the actual struts out isnt too bad . took me about 40 minutes for the first side and 15 minutes for the second. i remember having to drop a LCA as it seems the strut wont lift over it , its been a while but you will see what i mean .
the spring compressor you have to be really patient with . I just rent it and take my time . I have an air compressor so getting the strut nut off isnt too bad .
I would definitely recommend doing the upper strut bearing at the same time . its a piece of cake while the struts are out and its pretty cheap. this is what your strut pivots on when you turn and you dont want it to start groaning with your new struts.

If you've never done a spring replacement before I would suggest having a friend help who's done it before or have a shop do it. The chance of serious injury is high if the spring decides to shed its earthly confinement.

Thank you very much for the advice. What price should I be looking for in respect to the Upper Strut Mount plus Upper Strut Mount Bearing?
