How to disconnect drivers sun visor

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am trying to remove my A-pillars in order to fiberglass some speaker pods. Passenger side went smoothly, pillar out in about 5 minutes.

I get to the drivers side and cannot figure out how the hell to unplug the sun visor. The passenger side the connector came down with the visor. Drivers the only connector I can see is up inside where the bracket screws to the roof. There is no way I can get even 1 finger in there to unplug it. Tried pulling on the wire a little and it's just tearing up the red insulation over the wires and I am afraid to pull any harder.

Any tips? I really don't want to lay the fiberglass with the pillar in the car, but will if I can't get the damn visor removed.

    Thanks.

Passenger side and driver side visor have the same connector. I wouldn't pull hard, just see if you can get a pen or something up there and faniggle it to come down.

The front where you removed the screw needs to move down and forward to come out. You might have to wiggle it a bit. Once out there is about an inch or inch and a half of wire slack. Once you have it out that inch and a half there is a little metal spring you have to press thru a small hole in the side of the plastic connector housing. the connector then slips apart.

Are there differences between home link and non home link? I see a connector through the hole that looks slightly larger. Will try a pen or hook of some kind.

I have the visor down, there just appears no slack in the wire. The only thing I can think of is it is up there and some kind of bend/kink in the harness is preventing me getting it down any.

Watched that video last night, no idea how he got the connector apart with it like that. Mine simply won't. Going to give it another try later and hope to get it down. Drives me crazy when simple shit like does not go smoothly.

Not that I remember. I have home link on my car and IIRC, it's the same as the passenger side.

No they're different. If the driver visor has homelink its a larger connector.

Good to know, it definitely looked like a slightly bigger connector up through the hole.

Taking it out is easy, putting it back can be a pita.

If I may : moddifying this pillar could interfere with the curtain airbag.

This is what I am also concerned about, if its this much of an annoyance to unplug, how much of a pain will it be to put it back again.

Definitely understand where you are coming from, essentially I am not modifying the pillar itself. I am mounting a pair of small mid-range speakers up on the dash as close to the windshield as possible, but I want to mold the back of the pod the speakers sit in to the A-pillar so that it sits flush. The pillar itself will remain stock with no changes to it whatsoever. I am hoping to be able to make this back mold piece with the pillar out of the car, but I can possibly manage it with the pillar in the car if I am careful with the resin. For what I want to do, it may even be possible to make 2 molds off the passengers pillar (already removed from the car).

Its not that hard, just have to be patient. Just wiggle it a bit to pull it out, its probably stuck on something. You should be able to pul it out and unplug it outside of the headliner. Its puting it back where it wont block the sunvisor "J" tab thats tricky.

And I would work with the resin outside of the car lol

Success! Broke the clip on the connector but I think it will still hold fine when I put it back together. Had to push a small screwdriver into the hole, rotate the connector down enough to give me some slack and it popped right out.

Now to lay some fiberglass and then have fun putting the pillars back in again.

Not a whole lot to look at currently, but essentially I am hoping to build some kind of a pod to hold this:

Neatly up on the dashboard, the only progress I have made so far is removing the pillars and taping them off:

Hopefully I can get them looking at least halfway decent!! I had originally thought about recessing them down into the corners of the dash, but the amount of work required to remove the dash and then the simple fact of cutting holes in my dash did not really sit so well with me.

    Made a little progress:

Putting the visor back in was way easier than I expected. Getting the pillars back on was a pain though, lining those clips up was really annoying.
