    Underbody splashguard - repair?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Age has taken a toll.
    So has road debris.

    Thoughts?

Wonder if fiberglass weave + epoxy will help (patch the holes, fix broken off sections, reinforce, etc.)
Or making my own. Foam molds, carbon fiber, etc. - there was a thread somewhere.

Not sure why you would make CF underbody panels unless you didn't drive your car on the road, but seeing how road debris and age have taken their toll, just get some replacement ones. I picked mine up from ECS, didn't get Dealer Ones, got the less epensive ones, didn't fit like factory, but didn't sag or have issues, and they did what they were supposed to do.

What's a good cleaner for prep?
Dirty bellypans aren't Castrol Super Clean's forte.
Or maybe yes, after pressure wash

Pressure washing to clean, 1 inch aluminum stock- flat and right angle and aluminum rivets.

Did my C5 RS6 Sportec mod and repaired my B5 A4 belly pan that way.

^^ You can get the under engine and under trans panels on rockauto for around $20ea. They aren't OEM but they are cheap. I had to enlarge a couple holes to make it fit perfectly otherwise they are great. I think if you don't want to fork out the $$ for an aluminum one than you are much better off using the cheap RockAuto ones instead of trying to repair a cracked OEM piece. Unless you are super low. In that case get an aluminum one.

Fiberglass cloth and resin is very effective for repairing cracks and other damage to the belly pan. Especially when the entire surface is covered with cloth and resin. Doing this adds a lot of reinforcement and strength to the original structure of the part. Even better, is epoxy based resin, being a lot stronger and much more impact resistant than the polyester based resin usually used for fiberglass.

I don't doubt that you can repair it. My point is it that it makes no sense to spend an hour or more to repair it when you can buy a replacement for $20.

I concur. Fiberglass cloth from Home Depot or Marine suppliers and clear epoxy resin. Very strong and still maintains some flex and very easy to do. These are the same materials I use to repair dings on my surfboards. This can used to repair more than just surfboards and watercraft vehicles.

But the easiest and hassle free way is just buy a new under shield from Rockauto.

This, some self tappers, and some small bolts/washers/nuts kicking around garage also help.

I don't have a link, on a phone, but rockauto has the hardware kit as well - sort of anyways. They have one of the lengths in a box of I think 10 instead of the 3 sizes you get in the proper kit. It works fine though.

FCP has the fasteners too. Not bad, but still steep at $34 for a bunch of screws. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/aud...-a4-quattro-s4

That's cheaper than the kits on eBay, which is where I was considering getting them... Until now.

Tried w/ NAPA Bondo fiberglass cloth and AutoZone clear plastic epoxy.
The second you go to bend the plastic shield under its own weight, said repair falls off.

Those plastic Shields are just splash Shields that barely work. The panzer shield is the way to go

not legit of course, and you need two sets for a full pan, but the price certainly is right.

I got them a while back and they look decent enough, haven't installed though.

My Evo Thor plate paid itself off time and time over. Would have cracked at least 25 oil pans by now. Did a group buy with them years ago, in like 09 or so. And no, I'm not dropped too low (ie flush and not tucked).
